Spring 2020 Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research Recipients: Summer Applications Due Feb. 15

The provost’s office is pleased to announce recipients of the Spring 2020 Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research awards. These faculty members have been selected to collaborate with and mentor an undergraduate on a co-designed research experience during the 2020 spring semester:

  • Martin Cenek, computer science: “Data science for modeling athletic performance: from theory to practice” with Braeden Lane
  • Nelson Coates, physics: “Exploring Charge Transport in Solution-Processed Composites to Create New Energy Storage Materials” with Brynn Harrington and Jake Uyechi
  • Erin Currie, psychological sciences: “Celebrating Women of Color in Psychology” with Elisha Faagai
  • Deirdre Katz, education: “A mixed method exploration of the implementation of a school-wide social and emotional learning approach at an alternative high school” with Camille Tudury
  • Katie O’Reilly, biology: “Foraging behavior of jays” with Connor Vinyard
  • Ian Parkman, marketing: “How do Gender Non-Conforming (GNC) Users Perceive and Adapt Heteronormative Product Design Language?” with Remi Ziems

Meet the Dundon-Berchtold Architects Panel, Sept. 27

September 20, 2019

Please join the University of Portland, Soderstrom Architects, and renowned Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) for a celebration, lecture, panel discussion, and tour of Dundon-Berchtold Hall, the newest addition to the University of Portland campus, on Friday, September 27, beginning at 1:30 p.m., in the Brian Doyle Auditorium. RAMSA partner Gary Brewer will present a lecture and slide show on the scope of the project from conception to finished product, highlighting the body of knowledge and process required to design and build a new gothic revival building today.

The event is free but please RSVP at this link.

Dundon-Berchtold Hall was designed by Brewer in collaboration with Soderstrom Architects of Portland, Oregon. The panel discussion will include University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C.; Tom Greene, provost; Brewer, Dan Danielson, and others.

Spring 2019 Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research Recipients

  • Lara-Zuzan Golesorkhi, political science: “The Refugee Gender Gap – a new concept for an old phenomenon” with Hazel Stange
  • Jeff Meiser, political science: “Strategic Leadership and Military Effectiveness in the First Arab-Israeli War” with Temmo Cramer and Ryan Turner-Brady
  • Nermine Ramadan, mathematics: “A brief history of the fusion technology: the road towards the clean energy source of the future” with Grace Wallace, Esaul Castillo Ochoa, and Nicholas Salinas
  • Briana Rotter, nursing: “Caring for the dying: Comparison of traditional and transfer nursing students regarding their lived experience with palliative care” with Cheyenne Hoppe and Claire Olson.

A reminder to faculty: applications for Summer 2019 Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research are available here and are due February 15, 2019. Faculty members are invited to apply on behalf of themselves and an undergraduate student researcher for stipend support for an intensive undergraduate research experience during summer 2019. Students are expected to work full-time (35 hours per week) for 6 weeks on the project or the equivalent of 6 weeks over the course of one or both summer sessions. Faculty members are expected to work with and mentor the students in a co-designed research project.

During the summer students will be paid $2,500 for their work on the project and faculty will be compensated $1,000 for mentoring the student in research. Email ur@up.edu with questions or call John Orr, assistant provost, at x7857.

Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research: Apply Now

Since its inauguration in 2015, the Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research has provided support for faculty members from across the University who collaborate with undergraduates on a semester-long research project. The provost’s office is committed to increasing opportunities for student experiential learning, and this initiative represents a key element in achieving that goal.

Faculty members are invited to apply for one of ten Spring 2019 Provost’s Initiative Grants for support to collaborate with an undergraduate on a co-designed research project during the spring semester 2019. Students are expected to meet and work with the faculty member weekly. Students will enroll in a 493 course and will earn a minimum of 1-credit for their work on the project and produce an artifact (research paper, lit review, or presentation etc.) appropriate to the discipline. (Note 1 credit hour typically requires 45 hours of work on the project, which includes faculty meeting time). Faculty members who are new to undergraduate research at University of Portland will receive $1,500 for mentoring the student in research, while experienced faculty members will be compensated $1,000.

Apply For Spring 2016 Provost’s Initiative Grants

In spring of 2015, the Provost’s Initiative for Undergraduate Research was inaugurated. Faculty members from across the University collaborated with undergraduates on a research project that extended throughout the semester. The provost’s office is committed to increasing opportunities for experiential student learning, and this initiative represents a key element in achieving that goal. Faculty members are invited to apply for one of ten Spring 2016 Provost’s Initiative grants for support to collaborate with an undergraduate on a co-designed research project during the spring semester 2016.

Students are expected to meet and work with the faculty member weekly. Students will enroll in a 493 course and will earn a minimum of 1-credit for their work on the project and produce an artifact (research paper, literary review, or presentation, etc.) appropriate to the discipline. (Note: 1 credit hour typically requires 45 hours of work on the project, which includes faculty meeting time). Faculty members will be compensated $1,000 for mentoring the students in research. Applications are available at up.edu/undergraduateresearch and are due December 1, 2015.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Aziz Inan, Shiley School of Engineering. recently shared some of his work on palindrome dates with the staff of Farmers’ Almanac which lead to an articled titled “2021: A Special Year For Palindrome Dates, Starting This Month!” See the article using this link.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.

Steven Kolmes, environmental studies, wrote an editorial on “Sustainability and the Role of Higher Education” in Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development, Vol. 62, , pp. 2-3. Amber Vermeesch, nursing, received an Opus Prize Foundation Grant Sabbatical Support, Opus Prize Foundation, $5,000, on November 12, 2020.
