Either you just received your first college schedule (YAY), or you are a college student with lingering questions on how to read your “student detail schedule” on SelfServe. Either way, we are here to help. Here are a few tips to help you read your schedule with ease and expertise:
- Course Name
- This is the long form name of your course. These names will more often be similar to course names from other colleges and universities.
- Course number and section
- Example: BIO 333A
- This indicates the department to which the course belongs (BIO to the Biology department) as well as the specific course number. You may find that this number corresponds to the course level. 100 and 200 course level classes are often introductory courses while 300 and 400 level courses are often upper division courses and electives.
- Associated Term
- Example: Fall 2019
- This is the semester and year you are taking this course.
- CRN
- This is the course registry number which is inputted into your schedule yourself starting your sophomore year.
- Status
- This will tell you if and when you were officially registered for the course by the registrar.
- Assigned Instructor
- Here you will find the name of your professor or instructor, as well as a mail icon which you can click to contact them via their UP email.
- Grade Mode
- This will tell you whether or not the grading scale is based on an A-F scale or pass/non-pass scale
- Credits
- Lectures are usually 3 course credits and labs are 1 course credit. Some elective courses (i.e. Dance, Painting/Drawing, etc.) are worth 2 credit hours, others may only be worth 1 credit hour (i.e. Leadership, HPE courses, etc.).
- Level
- The University of Portland offers undergraduate as well as graduate programs. Your program will be indicated here.
- Scheduled Meeting Times
- Type: “class” will normally be indicated here
- Time: Time of class will be indicated here, but some schedules may say TBA if it is non-traditional class such as research with UP faculty.
- Days: You may see MWF, TR, or just one of these letters. Here is how to decode these…
- M: Monday
- T: Tuesday
- W: Wednesday
- R: Thursday
- F: Friday
- Where
- Example: Romanaggi Hall 206
- This is the name of the building and the room number of the class. Rooms in the 100s are on the first floor, 200s on the second floor, etc,. You will likely have classes in the basement of Franz Hall or Buckley Center during your time at UP, and these will be indicated by 0_. For example, Buckley Center 01.
- Date Range
- This will tell you for how long you will be attending this class. Usually it is the whole semester from Aug-Dec or Jan-May, or will be
- Schedule Type
- This will indicate whether the class is a lecture, laboratory, or research.
- Instructors
- Here is the full name of your instructor as well as another link to contact them via email. Sometimes there are two instructors.
