Next UP Hive Event: Jan. 21

piegirlThe next UP Hive event will be “Quality! For Fork’s Sake,” taking place on Wednesday, January 21, at CENTRL (1355 NW Everett Street, no. 100), starting at 5:30 p.m. Alumni panelists will explore how food is produced and critiqued, from farm practices to presentation on consumers’ and customers’ plates.

Panelist Jason Kallingal ’04 owns Life of Pie Wood-Fired Pizza, which has been named one of Portland’s best pizzas. Panelist Megan Hallstone (pictured) was born and raised on Columbia Farms, located on Sauvie Island. After graduating from college and moving around in the corporate world for several years, she traded in her sneakers for rubber boots and returned to her family’s farm.

The UP Hive is an open forum for University of Portland alumni of all ages and professions who wish to connect with each other through networking and interactive educational events. Next UP HIVE Event, Nov. 5

HivenewAll are welcome to attend the next UP HIVE event, “Media Transformed: Capturing Our Attention in the Digital Age,” on Wednesday, November 5, at 5:30 p.m., at Colorhouse (519 NE Hancock St. #B, Portland, OR 97212). The HIVE group will explore the seismic shift taking place within the media industry. In a time when ordinary citizens are becoming on-scene reporters and traditional news outlets cite user-generated content, the media industry is challenged to engage readers and viewers and remain relevant in the digital age. Panelists will share their experience in navigating this changing industry.

Van Edwards copyThe next UP HIVE event will feature behavioral investigator Vanessa Van Edwards as she presents “The Science of Influence,” sharing seven scientifically proven ways to increase one’s influence and charisma, on Wednesday, June 4, at Portland’s Fox Tower (805 SW Broadway, Suite 2600), beginning at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments and appetizers will be served. Van Edwards will share the latest research that shows leaders have certain qualities that make them memorable and persuasive, and that it’s possible to learn those qualities. The panel discussion will include Sean Madden of Ziba Design; Robb Crocker of Funnelbox Production Studios; and Laura Mansfield of PAGATIM. They will discuss the importance of separating yourself from the pack by becoming a thought leader, and how to get noticed in your field and make some money while you’re at it.

The UP Hive is an open forum for alumni, MBA students, and supporters who are interested in business and entrepreneurial activity within the UP community. Mark Ganz has participated in the region’s ever-evolving health care community throughout his life, and health care has become his personal and professional cause. He is a member of the board of directors of Portland General Electric Company, the U.S. Bank-Oregon Advisory Board, the Oregon Business Council, Greater Portland Inc., Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, and many more. He also chairs the Aspen Institute Health Stewardship Project.
