The University of Portland Orchestra will present a concert on Tuesday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all, and will feature winners of the UP Student Concerto/Aria competition.

The University Orchestra will present Premier Performances on Tuesday, April 24, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Admission is free and all are welcome. The performance will feature debut guest soloist performances by UP seniors Catherine Jacobs, David Rogers, and Maddie Tran. Jacobs and Tran will sing arias by Handel, Mozart, Donizetti, and Bellini. Rogers will perform the first movement of Mozart’s bassoon concerto. The concert will also feature the premiere performance of “Portland,” written for the UP Orchestra and the city of Portland by composer Erich Stem. Two of the most definitive finales ever written will round out the program with the fourth movement of Dvořák’s “New World” symphony, and the third and fourth movements of Beethoven’s monumental Fifth Symphony.

The University of Portland Orchestra presents “Cinematic Symphony: A Night at the Movies,” featuring orchestral music from “Star Wars,” “Lord of the Rings,” “Apollo 13,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and more, on Tuesday, February 27, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The University of Portland music program presents “Lament and Reformation,” at 7:30 p.m., on Saturday, December 2, in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert will showcase the University of Portland Orchestra, and is free and open to the public. The program will feature faculty cello soloist Dieter Ratzlaf in Faure’s moving Elegie, Bach’s brilliant D Major Orchestral Suite (with the famous Air), and Mendelssohn’s grand Symphony #5 in D, “Reformation.”

The University Orchestra will present an evening of soloists on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.
The concert will feature UP’s violin professor, Kevin Lefohn, playing Vaughan Williams’ gorgeous “The Lark Ascending.” Student concerto competition winners Taylor Kendig (soprano) and Jonathan Liao (piano) will also be featured, singing arias by Strauss and Verdi, and playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24. The concert will also include George Lloyd’s 6th Symphony and William Walton’s “Crown Imperial March.”

The University of Portland Orchestra will perform with Portland’s Bravo Youth Orchestra on Sunday, February 28, at 7 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.
Bravo Youth Orchestra will open the concert and then be joined by the UPO string section for portions of Handel’s famed Water Music. The UPO will then continue its year of English music with movements from Holst’s The Planets, film music from William Walton, English folk songs arranged by Vaughan Williams, and George Butterworth’s beautiful depiction of the English countryside, On the Banks of the Green Willow.

The performing and fine arts department will present a screening of Buster Keaton’s classic silent film, “The General,” accompanied by a live soundtrack by the University Orchestra, on Saturday, January 23, in Buckley Center Auditorium. The soundtrack was written by student composer Dana Coppernoll-Houston. A pre-concert talk on film music will be presented by Edmund Stone, host of the nationally-syndicated film music radio show, “The Score,” at 6 p.m., followed by the screening and concert at 7 p.m.
This event is co-sponsored by the dean’s office of the College of Arts and Sciences and the McNerney-Hanson Endowed Chair in Ethics as an “Ethics and the Arts” initiative.

The University of Portland Orchestra will present “The Snowman” on Sunday, November 22, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. All faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome. As the performing and fine arts department’s all-English concert season continues, “The Snowman,” will be narrated by All Classical radio personality Edmund Stone, who also hosts The Score. Bring the entire family for this magical story about the adventures of a young boy and a snowman who has come to life. The concert will also include holiday music by Holst, Vaughan Williams and others.

The University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will open the 2015-2016 concert season with a free performance on Saturday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. All faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome.
The Wind Symphony features violin instructor Kevin Lefohn performing the American premiere of Peter Adams’ Concerto Burlesca for violin and wind band; conducting associates Tara Egan and Samantha Wright will also make their concert debuts. The UP Orchestra presents Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor featuring music student Maranda Hamilton; also Hubert Parry’s rollicking Symphonic Variations, and the iconic “Nimrod” movement from Elgar’s Enigma Variations.

The University of Portland Orchestra will present “American Voices,” a free concert on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Faculty, staff, students, and the public are welcome. Highlighting works of American composers and performers, this concert will feature Aaron Copland’s stirring Lincoln Portrait, with narration by Edmund Stone of All Classical Portland. Also on the program will be the premiere of Prometheus, composed by University of Portland senior Dana Coppernoll-Houston, and arias by 2014 Student Concerto/Aria contest winner Amelia Segler.
On Wednesday, April 22, the University of Portland Women’s Chorale will present “Girls Night Out: A Festival of Women in Song,” at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all, and features women’s choirs from UP, Vancouver School of Arts & Academics, Clark College Women’s Chorale Ensemble, Lewis & Clark College Voces Auream, and Portland State University Vox Femina.
