Gwen Sandford: Good Luck & Bon Voyage

A note from international students services director Mike Pelley:

After 13 great years, a farewell to Gwen Sandford, program manager for the Office of International Student Services (ISS). Gwen has accepted a new position as director of international student services at Reed College, a well-deserved promotion and a very smart move by her new employer. Gwen started at UP as the ISS program assistant, and after a few years was promoted to program manager. During her time at UP, Gwen worked tirelessly on the behalf of international students, our international community, and for the greater UP community. Her knowledge and expertise of cross-cultural communication and global education systems made her an exceptional international student advisor and admissions counselor. Her last day was July 10. Best wishes to Gwen!

International Education Week Begins Nov. 18

International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative sponsored by the US Department of State and Department of Education. It celebrates internationalization and diversity on college campuses across the nation each November. This year, UP will celebrate IEW from November 18 to 22.

Please join your colleagues and student organizations in recognizing and celebrating international education and exchange on campus. Events include faculty discussions, films, art, international cuisine, workshops, class visits and more. Visit the IEW website for the complete calendar of events. Please consider hosting an event during the week to share or promote your international and intercultural programs, research, student projects and more. The IEW coordinating team will assist in promoting the week of events, speakers, music and workshops to the UP campus and community.

International Student Graduation Reception, May 2

1flagsInternational student services will be hosting their annual International Student Graduation Reception on Friday, May 1, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the Shiley Hall third floor atrium. Faculty and staff who worked closely with international students who are graduating are welcome to join in the celebration. Questions can be directed to Gwen Sandford at iss@up.edu.

Host Families Needed

japanEvery December a group of prospective students from St. Mary’s College in Nagoya, Japan visits the University of Portland campus and surrounding area. For many years the University has had a relationship with St. Mary’s College in which Japanese students study for two years at St. Mary’s College and transfer to UP to complete their bachelor’s degrees. This year, the international student services office is looking for two families that would like to host one female student during their visit. They will stay in Portland from December 20 to 27.
