TLC Brownbag Session: When Students Stop Showing Up, Feb. 13

The Teaching & Learning Collaborative invites all faculty to a brownbag conversation in the Murphy Room from noon to 1 p.m. on Wednesday February 13, exploring the topic “When Students Stop Showing Up.” Gina Loschiavo (Care Team coordinator) and Brenda Greiner (SARC director) will highlight campus resources that enable faculty to keep being faculty when a student stops attending a class; CAS associate dean Andrew Downs, Pamplin School of Business associate dean Lisa Reed, and English professor Molly Hiro will offer faculty members’ perspectives on this thorny issue. TLC Tip of the Week: Early Alert

gina2-copyThis week’s TLC Tip of the Week comes from early alert coordinator Gina Loschiavo, who has visited just about every department on campus this fall and fielded several recurring questions from faculty as they strive to implement Early Alert in their teaching and advising with students. We thought doing this in the form of an FAQ piece would be an efficient way to remind faculty about crucial aspects of the program.  

  • One Common Misconception: Early Alert is NOT just about grades. The Early Alert program is a referral program for all faculty, staff, students, and parents who are concerned about the physical, emotional, academic, or personal health of a University student. The Early Alert team can assess the situation, offer support to the student and reporting party, and provide referrals to the breadth of resources on-campus.
  • How do I submit an Early Alert? Simply go to up.edu/earlyalert and click the “Submit an Early Alert” button. You will be taken to a form where you can provide information about the student you are concerned about.
  • What happens after I submit an Early Alert? Early Alert reports are received by Loschiavo and reviewed by the Early Alert team to offer support to the reporting party and the student. After submitting the report you will be contacted to see if you have additional information to share or if you need guidance to support the student of concern. At any point if you have information you would like to share, please contact Gina.
  • What should I do if I want to learn more about the Early Alert program? If you have questions about the Early Alert program or simply want to learn more, please reach out to Loschiavo at x7709 or loschiav@up.edu, or visit the Early Alert website at up.edu/earlyalert.

New Early Alert Coordinator: Gina Loschiavo

The Office of Student Affairs has hired Gina Loschiavo as the coordinator for Early Alert and special projects. The Early Alert program, co-chaired by Matt Baasten, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School, and Matthew Rygg, associate vice president of student development, is a referral program for faculty, staff, and parents who are concerned about the physical, emotional, academic, or personal health of a University student.

Loschiavo’s role includes direct outreach to students of concern and coordination with the Early Alert team to assess situations, offer support, and provide referrals to the breadth of resources on campus. She will offer training for faculty and staff about the Early Alert program on Wednesday, September 7, at 12:05 p.m., in the Teske Dining Room, with lunch provided. The training will cover how the Early Alert program supports students and how faculty and staff play a crucial role in identifying students of concern.

Gina will continue to offer trainings throughout the fall semester and is available for individual and departmental presentations.

Residence Life Staff Awards

The following awards were presented by residence life director Chris Haug on Monday, May 2, at the Residence Life Staff Appreciation Banquet:

  • The Pilot Award for Service within Residence Life was presented to Heather Heilberg, a first-year resident assistant for Shipstad Hall, who demonstrated outstanding service and spirit to the community.
  • The Director’s Award for Meritorious Service within Residence Life was presented to Ana Fonseca, a second-year resident assistant for Mehling Hall, who has dedicated over a year of distinguished service and commitment to residence life.
  • Mehling Hall director Gina LoSchiavo and Haggerty & Tyson Hall director Tyler Hale each received the Holy Cross Award for Residential Mission for making God known, loved, and served in UP residence halls.
