Shannen Dee Williams Presents “The Real Sister Act,” Nov. 16
Shannen Dee Williams of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville will present a free lecture, “The Real Sister Act: Black Catholic Nuns and the Long Struggle to Desegregate U.S. Religious Life,” on Thursday, November 16, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. The event is hosted by the Garaventa Center and is free and open to all. In her talk, Williams will chart the fiercely contested entries of U.S. born black women and girls into historically white Catholic sisterhoods from the nineteenth century to the present day. Williams is an assistant professor of U.S. and African-American history, and is currently working on her first book: Subversive Habits: The Untold Story of Black Catholic Nuns in the United States. This “Did you know” series comes to you as an initiative of the Garaventa Center and Campus Ministry, intended to broaden awareness of spiritual development opportunities on the University campus. Look for more in the weeks to come.
Digital Humanities Brown Bag Workshop, Oct. 30
The Teaching and Learning Collaborative will host a brown bag workshop on the possibilities of “Digital Humanities” on Monday, October 30, from noon to 1 p.m., in the library’s Digital Lab. Trina Marmarelli of Reed College and UP’s own Spanish professor Lora Looney will tag team to present both a) an overview of how humanities professors might use digital tools to solve research and teaching problems; b) a specific application of this approach, namely, Looney’s “Spain Remembers” project and portable lessons learned along the way.
While all faculty are invited to this session, those in the humanities are especially encouraged to attend. Bring your lunch and digital device, so you can explore along with the facilitators. Light refreshments will be provided.

Memorial Service Honoring Departed Colleagues, Nov. 2
Following a resolution of the Academic Senate, November 2, All Souls Day, will include a service honoring all faculty and staff who have died in the current and past years. The service will begin at 4 p.m. at the Faculty and Staff Memorial (rain location: Chapel of Christ the Teacher). Following brief readings and common prayer, a wreath will be laid at the memorial, a sign of remembering those who have passed. A reception will follow in the Bauccio Commons Board Room.

Did you know about Vespers, or Evening Prayer? All are welcome to join the local Holy Cross brothers and priests as they gather for Evening Prayer at 5:40 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher, Monday through Wednesday as well as Fridays. Rooted in scripture, this daily offering is a way to give thanks for the day and ask for God’s continued blessing. If you are unsure of how to participate, feel free to come in, pick up a book, sit next to a priest or brother, and just ask for help.
