Advent Visio Divina, Dec. 12: All Welcome

Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center invite you to join with others in the campus community for Advent Visio Divina on Wednesday, December 12, at 12:35 p.m., following noon Mass. Visio Divina is an ancient form of Christian prayer in which we allow our hearts and imaginations to enter into a sacred image, in silence, to see what God might have to say to us. Our meditation will focus on an illumination from The Saint John’s Bible. All are welcome.

Celebrate Thirst Friday, Dec. 7 

All faculty and staff are warmly invited to Thirst Friday at the Garaventa Center for festive treats and beverages and good cheer as the semester winds down on Friday, December 7, from 4-6 p.m., in Franz Hall room 330. “Dostoevsky and the Catholic Literary Tradition,” Nov. 12 

The Garaventa Center invites all faculty and staff to a free lecture entitled “Dostoevsky’s Engagement with the Catholic Literary Tradition,” presented by Saint Louis University professor Elizabeth Blake, on Monday, November 12, at 7:15 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 319. In her talk, Blake, an assistant professor of Russian, discusses the “Catholic underground” Dostoevsky portrayed in his works as he was alternately repelled and fascinated by Catholicism in all its medieval, Reformation, and modern manifestations.

“Dr. Faustus” Pre-Play Panel and Reception, Nov. 17

The Garaventa Center warmly invites all ticket holders for the Saturday, November 17 performance of Dr. Faustus to a complimentary wine, cheese, and themed dessert reception as campus experts highlight what to look and listen for in the show. The reception begins at 6:15 p.m., with the panel starting at 6:45 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall.

Prayers for Peace, Nov. 9

All students, faculty, staff, and religious of all faiths, spiritual traditions, and languages are warmly invited to participate in this year’s Prayers for Peace event on Friday, November 9, at 2 p.m., at the International Peace Garden by Buckley Auditorium. As part of the event, international students and others from the UP community will offer public calls for peace in their native language. “It’s Alive!” Beckman Humor Lecture, Oct. 24

Justin Yeakel will offer a free lecture, “It’s Alive! Competition, Extinction, and the Ecology of Reanimation,” on Wednesday, October 24, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. In his talk, Yeakel will plumb the surprising wisdom of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with regard to competitive forces and survival in ecological communities. Yeakel is one part paleoecologist, two parts theoretical biologist, a recovering anthropologist, and a fan of science fiction and cosmic horror. He is a professor of theoretical ecology at UC Merced, and lives in Gilroy, Calif. (“Garlic Capital of the World”) to avoid the undead.

“Alabado sea el Señor: A Concert of Praise,” Oct. 12

The Garaventa Center and Campus Ministry invite one and all to “Alabado sea el Señor: A Concert of Praise,” at 7 p.m., on Friday, October 12, in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The event is free and open to all; reception to follow. Two of Oregon Catholic Press’ most talented artists, pastoral musicians and composers Rudy López and Estela García-López, will share an evening of stories and bilingual song focusing on their culture, the people they serve,  and their passionate and joyful faith in Jesus.

“Conscience After Religion” with Bernard Prusak, Oct. 9

Bernard Prusak will present “Conscience After Religion: On the Political and Moral Implications of Growing Religious Non-Affiliation” at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, in Franz Hall room 120. The lecture is free and open to all.

Bernard Prusak is professor of philosophy and director of the McGowan Center for Ethics and Social Responsibility at King’s College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He posits: “At the end of the eighteenth century, the concept of conscience was tightly bound to religion. But what respect does conscience warrant “after religion” — that is, once it is no longer primarily understood as the religious conscience that dominated the eighteenth century and shaped the Bill of Rights? Underlying this question is a subtler one: what else might we lose if and when we lose religion?”

“Passing Over: Migration and the Eucharist,” Oct. 3

Fr. Dan Groody, C.S.C., of the Kellogg Institute for International Studies at Notre Dame, will offer a lecture titled “Passing Over: Migration and the Eucharist” at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, in the Bauccio Commons Dining Room. The event is free and open to all.

In his talk Fr. Groody asks, amidst the divisive and polarizing rhetoric around migrants and refugees today, what does it mean to be witness to the Body of Christ?
