The first meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group for the 2017-18 year will be Friday, September 29, at 3:30 p.m., in the Franz Hall Murphy Conference Room. The group will discuss the article “The Free Banquet: The Case for Universal Basic Income” by George Scialabba and the poem “To be of use” by Marge Piercy. Readings can be found on the Garaventa Center website. All faculty and staff are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

The next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be on Friday, February 3, at 3:30 p.m., in the Murphy Room. The group will be discussing “Hope Reimagined” from Krista Tippett’s 2016 book Becoming Wise: An Enquiry into the Art and Mystery of Living, and the poem “Atwater Kent” by William Stafford. The next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 4, in the Murphy Conference Room. The group will be discussing Alison Mountz (with others) “Slow Scholarship: A Feminist Politics of Resistance Through Collective Action in the Neoliberal University” and “iPoem,” by George Bilgere. The first meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group for the 2016-17 academic year will be on Friday, September 16, 3:30-5 p.m., in the Murphy Room on the 4th floor of Franz Hall. The group will discuss Johns Hopkins political science professor Jane Bennett’s “The Wonder of Minor Experiences” from her book The Enchantment of Modern Life: Attachments, Crossings and Ethics. The group will discuss a chapter from William Deresiewicz’s book Excellent Sheep entitled “Great Books,” an excerpt from Gunartana’s Mindfulness in Plain English, and a reflection by Thicht Nhat Hanh entitled “Washing Dishes” (from his book Miracle of Mindfulness). The Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will have its first meeting of the year on Friday, Sept. 25 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Murphy Room. We will discuss a chapter from Chris Lowney’s Heroic Leadership: Best Practices from a 450-Year-Old Company that Changed the World and Tim Kreider’s 2012 New York Times Op-ed piece, “The ‘Busy’ Trap.” All faculty and staff are welcome.
