2018 Faculty Award Winners Announced

The University’s Faculty Awards were presented on Tuesday, May 8, at the Faculty Awards Dinner, with the following results:

  • The James Culligan Award, established in 1953 in memory of a dedicated servant of the University and presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished service, was presented to Matthew Kuhn, Br. Godfrey Vassallo Professor of Civil Engineering (pictured). Winners of the Culligan Award wear the medal with their academic regalia, as a sign of the University’s highest faculty honor.
  • The Deans’ Award for Faculty Leadership, presented annually to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies, in an extraordinary way, the qualities of teaching and scholarship described in the University’s Articles of Administration for appointment, advancement in rank, and tenure, was presented to Lorretta Krautscheid, nursing.
  • The Outstanding Teaching Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who is a particular exemplar of the University’s commitment to superb teaching, was presented to Tara Prestholdt, biology..
  • The Outstanding Scholarship Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who presents unusually significant and meritorious achievement in professional scholarship during the past two academic years, and whose work substantively enhances the effectiveness of his or her classroom teaching, was presented to Alexandra Hill, international languages and cultures..
  • The Faculty Award for Outstanding Service, presented annually by the Committee on Committees to a faculty member “who engages in creative service work that transforms not only local communities but also those afar and acknowledges distinguished contributions that express the University’s commitment to responding to the needs of the world,” was presented to Anissa Rogers, sociology and social work.

Theology Thursday Lecture, April 5: “Preparing Students to Encounter Suffering of Grief & Loss”

University of Portland professors Rebecca Gaudino, Barb Braband, and Anissa Rogers will present the next Theology Thursday lecture, “Preparing Students to Encounter the Suffering of Grief and Loss,” on Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. The lecture is free and all are welcome.

Gaudino, Braband, and Rogers make up an interdisciplinary research team and will present their award-winning interview and Photovoice project as well as a pedagogical model that has emerged from their research into how to teach students to accompany people who have experienced loss.

2015 Katherine A. Kendall International Social Work Grant

kendall1 copyThe University of Portland’s Dorothy Day Social Work Program, in collaboration with its Studies Abroad and Spanish programs, has been awarded a $10,000 Katherine A. Kendall International Social Work Grant, sponsored by the Council on Social Work Education.

The grant will allow the University’s social work program to make significant improvements to their curriculum with regard to international content, and will support collective efforts to reestablish a studies abroad program in Latin America that will serve all UP social work students.

The Katherine A. Kendall Institute for International Social Work Education seeks to prepare educators, researchers, students, and practitioners for an increasingly global community through its programs and initiatives. Established with contributions to an endowment in honor of renowned social work pioneer Katherine A. Kendall (pictured, 1910-2010), the Institute promotes standards of excellence for international social work to integrate related concepts into social work curricula and seeks to enrich perspectives, understandings, collaboration, and networking within the social work community.

UP Social Work Students Shine

rogers copyTwo University of Portland social work students, Rebecca Tabor and Yuri Hernandez, have won competitive national scholarships through the Phi Alpha National Social Work Honor Society, according to Anissa Rogers, social work. Three students are chosen each year from a national pool for the Patty Gibbs Wahlberg Scholarship based on a student’s service, scholarship, and leadership.

Rebecca Taylor won first place, which comes with a cash prize and a trip to the national meeting of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors, where she will speak to an audience of students. Senior Yuri Hernandez won third place, which comes with a cash prize. Last year, UP social work student Sophie Anderson won third place.

Phi Alpha’s executive director, Paul Baggett, commented on how outstanding Taylor and Hernandez’s applications were, and was impressed that UP had two winners in one year, and one last year. For more information contact Rogers at 7304 or rogers@up.edu.

UP Daycare Fundraiser

The UP Child Care Advisory Board (CCAB) and Hocus Focus Photo­graphy are offering a photo shoot fundraiser to benefit the UP child care facility. All faculty and staff are welcome to sign up for a 20-30 minute photo shoot of their kids and/or the whole family, and 20 percent of proceeds will go back to the UP facility. The shoot will be held on Sunday, April 21, beginning at 9 a.m., in Buckley Center room 108. To schedule your photo shoot and obtain a pricing list, please e-mail Anissa Rogers, social and behavioral sciences, at rogers@up.edu.
