Giving Tuesday Gratitude!

This year’s Giving Tuesday event was a huge success, according to Amy Eaton, development. It was a record-breaking year for Giving Tuesday, as the UP community:

Beat the goal of attaining 400 gifts in a 24-hour period
Raised $180,753 from 554 gifts and pledges, from 538 donors for the day
Increased the total number of gifts raised that day, from 2017, by 38% and increased the amount raised by 89%
Secured an additional 210 GOLD (graduates of the last decade) donors through a TOP (Telephone Outreach Program) Pre-Giving Tuesday Drive and raised $14,021.

With the pre-event Pre-Giving Tuesday Drive and day of efforts, the team was able to establish an overall new record of 741 gifts and $189,118 raised for Giving Tuesday campaign. This event is important to our end of year fundraising efforts and is also a warm-up to our #PilotsGive campaign.

#PilotsGive A Monumental Success!

Thanks to the hard work and generosity of Pilots all over the globe, #PilotsGive was a monumental success! The development team is working hard to crunch the final numbers but they can report that, in just 24 hours, 2,771 donors made a gift, raising $683,263 to support students, faculty, staff, athletics, and programs on The Bluff. We are humbled by this tremendous show of generosity and in awe of the what the Pilot community can do when we work together for a common goal. Thank you so much for helping to make this day so monumental.

Special appreciation goes out to the 12 campaigns for #PilotsGive. The spirit of this year’s event was about supporting all the great work the campaigns are doing—highlighting students, faculty, athletics, and programs. These campaigns gave it their all to demonstrate what is possible when Pilots put philanthropy into action. To help reward these campaigns’ efforts, contests were created to provide extra funds. Athletics won the Grand Challenge with 1,033 donors participating. School of Nursing won the Academic Challenge, College of Arts and Sciences came in second, and Pamplin School of Business came in third. For the Athletics contest, women’s soccer won first place, men’s tennis won second place, men’s soccer third place, volleyball fourth place, and men’s track and cross country took fifth place. Congratulations to all these campaigns for their great work on #PilotsGive and their dedication to UP students!

Pilots Give 24-Hour Day of Giving, April 4-5

Mark your calendars for April 4-5 for UP’s first Day of Giving. Join University relations as we launch a 24-hour, online campaign focused on building resources for UP. Throughout the 24-hour period, there will be several on-campus hosted events including the Franz Grilled Cheese Machine, happy hour in the Pilot House, Portside with Pilots, Thankful for Donors Donuts, and more.

Pilots Give is our opportunity to reach out to Pilots near and far and reconnect them to campus. By encouraging philanthropy from those who have benefitted from a UP education, we can strengthen our programs at UP. The difference between a good school and a great school is giving. By creating an annual tradition through Pilots Give, we can continue to transform education for UP students today and tomorrow.

Pilots Give: Help Support Ignite Grants

The deadline for Faculty Ignite Grants is the end of March, but that doesn’t mean the Office of Development will quit raising money for this great cause. For Pilots Give, UP regent and 1993 alumnus Rich Baek has stepped up with a $25,000 matching gift to encourage participation in UP’s first Day of Giving on April 4 and 5. As part of this challenge, he is donating $10,000 towards the Faculty Ignite Grants. After 1,000 donors have stepped up, $10,000 will be released for the Ignite Grants for Faculty Innovation. Managed by the Office of the Provost, Ignite Grants support new ideas and approaches for course, curriculum, and program development that make an innovative contribution to UP’s teaching and learning future. The Ignite Grant Fund will be listed as part of the Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation campaign for Pilots Give. Donors, including alumni, parents, students, and faculty and staff, can all select this important fund during the Pilots Give event. The Ignite Grants are part of a new initiative to support development and innovative teaching and learning on campus. The development office has raised $35,000 to date, with a $25,000 match from the provost’s office. The plan is to keep raising money and build funds for this important initiative.

Faculty and Staff are encouraged to participate in Pilots Give. They can make their annual gift, volunteer at campus events, or attend events in support of the campaign. The goal for the 24-hour fundraiser is to reach 1,000 donors and unlock over $100,000 in matching gift challenges that have already been secured. Twelve campus campaigns have been set up to support faculty and student success—now we just need our community to step and support this wonderful event for UP.

Get Ready for #GivingTuesday on November 28

On Tuesday, November 28, the University of Portland will join the global movement to celebrate generosity by launching the second UP Giving Tuesday campaign, according to Amy Eaton, development. Last year’s multi-media event resulted in the largest number of gifts to the University ever given in one day, with 258 gifts secured in 24 hours.

This year, we are setting the bar even higher, and Pilots near and far will come together to give back to The Bluff. The Senior Class Committee will be setting up stations at the Commons, Franz Hall, and the Clark Library with free hot chocolate and “philanthropy facts” for students to learn about giving. An anonymous donor is offering students the chance to win a $250 donation to fund a designation of their choice on campus. Find out more at this link.

Giving Tuesday is a great day for faculty and staff to make a gift to the University and help reach our goal. If you have already given, be sure to like and share the fun Giving Tuesday content with your friends and fellow Pilots.

The Office of Marketing and Communications is creating a Giving Tuesday tool kit that can be found here, with special social media images that easily be uploaded to show support for your part of campus. If you don’t see a graphic for an area of campus you want to promote, email upsocial@up.edu and one will be created for you.

The goal for the day is to reach 350 gifts. Three generous families have challenged our community to meet this goal and spread the word about the impact of scholarships at UP. When the goal is reached, the families will give $40,000 in scholarship support.

All Hands On Deck: Giving Where Your Gift Matters Most

Every year, the University of Portland strives to increase its number of donors in order to sustain needed philanthropy and build a pipeline of support for years to come. Last year we reached our highest number of donors with over 7,500 people making a gift to UP. With just one week left for the All Hands On Deck Campaign— there is still plenty of time for faculty and staff to help out. The best part is that it will feel great!

From now until May 7, as part of the campaign, those closest to UP—students, parents, faculty, and staff—are being asked to consider their own philanthropy and what type of giving would make them feel good. Is it giving to a scholarship for a student? Donating to support research? Could it be for a department to help accomplish a major goal? Is there a place or program on campus that could use some extra help?

As the campaign video shares, UP is our home—where we live, pray, play, and work. By giving from the heart, faculty and staff can and support UP students, projects, programs, and spaces that are personally meaningful to them.

For giving options, faculty and staff can visit the giving website and select what will work best for them. These options include:

Signing up for payroll renewal
Making a recurring gift through a credit card
Giving a one-time online gift
Supporting the Rowing Team’s crowdfunding efforts for the lower campus
Dropping a gift off at the Development office

Giving Tuesday: Let’s Raise 100 New Gifts for UP

purple-present150 On Tuesday, November 29, Pilots near and far will come together to celebrate Giving Tuesday for the first time at UP, according to Amy Eaton, development. For this day, our goal will be to raise 100 new gifts within a 24-hour period. When we reach the 100 gifts, a $10,000 gift from a generous parent will be unlocked to support student scholarships at UP.

The Senior Class Gift Committee will be joining efforts with University relations to raise awareness and engage students in this great philanthropic event. Students will set up a giving station at the Pilot House, with photo opportunities with Wally Pilot. Marketing and communications will launch a fun social media campaign, alumni relations will engage their chapters, and development will be reaching out to all channels to inspire support for UP students.

Giving Tuesday is a fantastic day for faculty and staff to make their gifts too. To participate, simply go online to this link. November 4 marked the beginning of UP’s annual Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign, running to Friday, December 11. During this time, the development office asks employees to make their annual gifts and pledge their support to the University. Last year, over 300 employees raised $148,000 for student scholarships, building projects like the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, athletics, and various programs such as Entrepreneur Scholars, fine arts, and the Moreau Center.

Faculty and Staff donations are among the most important gifts to UP. They send a powerful message to students, alumni, businesses, foundations, and friends of the University: that those closest to UP support its mission financially as well as professionally.
