Pilots Give 24-Hour Day of Giving, April 4-5

March 29, 2018

Mark your calendars for April 4-5 for UP’s first Day of Giving. Join University relations as we launch a 24-hour, online campaign focused on building resources for UP. Throughout the 24-hour period, there will be several on-campus hosted events including the Franz Grilled Cheese Machine, happy hour in the Pilot House, Portside with Pilots, Thankful for Donors Donuts, and more.

Pilots Give is our opportunity to reach out to Pilots near and far and reconnect them to campus. By encouraging philanthropy from those who have benefitted from a UP education, we can strengthen our programs at UP. The difference between a good school and a great school is giving. By creating an annual tradition through Pilots Give, we can continue to transform education for UP students today and tomorrow.

Everyone on campus can do something to help us reach our goal of 1,000 gifts in 24 hours. To learn more or volunteer, use this link or please contact Amy Eaton, development, at x8551 or eatona@up.edu.

Please Complete Employee Commute Options Survey by March 29

March 9, 2018

All full-time employees are asked to complete the Employee Commute Options (ECO) Survey to help keep the University compliant with applicable laws requiring annual surveys of transportation modes used by the campus community, according to Gerald Gregg, public safety. The ECO Survey is required to be completed every two years, according to the Department of Environmental Quality.

This quick survey will help the University understand our current commuting practices and transportation needs. We thank you in advance for taking a few moments to complete this survey, which is used to help us build better transportation options for the campus. Those who complete the survey by Thursday, March 29 will be entered into a drawing for one of two Fred Meyer gift cards. The survey can be completed using this link.

UP Recognized for Commitment to Clean Wind Power

March 2, 2018

The University of Portland has once again been recognized for its environmental impact commitment by virtue of participation in the Portland General Electric Clean Wind program, according to André Hutchinson, physical plant. A certificate was presented to UP representatives on Wednesday, February 28. Every year, UP self-directs the maximum percentage of public purpose charge toward renewable power in the form of clean wind, thus offsetting carbon production with clean wind production. The University’s 2017 participation included more than 1.6 million kWh of renewable power purchased, significantly reducing our carbon footprint by avoiding the emittance of more than 2.5 million pounds of CO2 into the environment. That amount is the equivalent of more than 2.8 million vehicle miles not driven, or planting more than 300 trees. The PGE Electric Clean Wind program is just one of many sustainability and strategic energy management initiatives undertaken within the physical plant throughout the course of any given year.

For more information contact Hutchinson at hutchina@up.edu.

Annual Mazzocco Lecture in Distributive Justice: Robert S. Chang, March 8

March 2, 2018

The 2018 Mazzocco Lecture in Distributive Justice will take place on Thursday, March 8, at 5 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. This year’s speaker will be Robert S. Chang, professor of law & executive director of the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality at Seattle University School of Law. His lecture is titled “Law’s Distributive Force.”

Chang won the 2018 M. Shanara Gilbert Human Rights Award from the Society of American Law Teachers, and is the author of Disoriented: Asian Americans, Law and the Nation-State (1999) and co-editor of an original collection of articles, Minority Relations: Intergroup Conflict and Cooperation (with Greg Robinson 2017). He served as co-counsel representing high school students in Tucson who challenged the constitutionality of an Arizona statute that resulted in the termination of the Mexican American Studies Program in the Tucson Unified School District. The Korematsu Center has been active filing amicus briefs in the Muslim travel ban cases and the rescission of DACA cases. Students from his Civil Rights Clinic have assisted on these and other cases.

The Mazzocoo Lecture is an annual lecture made possible by a gift to the University to honor the memory William James Mazzocco ’37, and is presented by the political science department.  This year, additional funding has been provided by the John Templeton Foundation though a grant from the Institute of Humane Studies.

For ADA accommodations or event information contact Bill Curtis, political science, at curtis@up.edu.

Exhibit: “The Architecture of Internment: The Buildup to Wartime Incarceration,” March 3-9

March 2, 2018

The Social Justice Program will bring a nationally recognized exhibit, “The Architecture of Internment: The Buildup to Wartime Incarceration,” to the UP campus from Saturday, March 3 to Friday, March 9, in St. Mary’s Student Center. Produced by Portland-based Graham Street Productions, which creates “socially relevant documentaries, books and exhibits to educate, inspire and mobilize audiences,” the exhibit explores how Oregonians participated in the decision to incarcerate Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants during World War II. It includes personal letters and proclamations to Oregon Governor Charles A. Sprague in 1941 and 1942, advocating for the exclusion and incarceration of Japanese American Oregonians; the governor’s response to these letters; blueprints of potential civilian prison locations; letters from Japanese Americans responding to this injustice; and more. All are welcome to view the exhibit and discuss its implications for contemporary responses to racism and xenophobia.

Cosponsors include the departments of communication studies, English, history, philosophy, political science, sociology, and social work; diversity and inclusion programs; CISGO; International Club; Filipino American Student Association; and the Moreau Center. For ADA accommodations and more information, contact Alice Gates, social work, at gatesa@up.edu.
