The ROTC programs will conduct a 24-hour vigil in honor of fallen veterans at the Praying Hands Memorial. The vigil will conclude on November 11 at 11 a.m. with a ceremony featuring a fly over by Air Force jets, special guest speaker, and reception.

Thanksgiving Food Drive
Army and Air Force ROTC and the Moreau Center SJCs are collaborating on a food drive this Thanksgiving. We have placed donation boxes in the residence halls and in different buildings on campus. We will be donating the food to those in need, through organizations like Because People Matter, the Oregon Food Bank, and LifeWorks NW. Your donations are much appreciated!
Please donate only non-perishable items that are not expired, that can be stored, and do not require refrigeration. A few examples of what is appropriate to donate: peanut butter, canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned stew, canned beans, pasta, rice.
The boxes will be open for donation from Nov. 5 to Nov. 22.

Veterans Day Observances (Nov. 10-11)
You are cordially invited to our Veterans Day Ceremony. A 24-hour vigil to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans from multiple wars will conclude with a commemoration ceremony on Saturday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. at University of Portland’s Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial on the East Quad.
Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will stand constant watch at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial for 24 consecutive hours, starting at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 10. The 24-hour vigil will conclude at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, with the playing of “Taps” during the retiring of the guard, and a posting of colors to begin a 45-minute commemoration ceremony. Saturday’s ceremony will include guest speaker Sergeant Major Dennis Emmons, who currently serves the Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion Special Forces Group.
Veteran’s Day Ceremony (Nov. 11)
The UP Veteran’s Day Ceremony is an annual event that occurs every Veteran’s Day at 11 a.m. Our campus Air Force and Army ROTC units take the lead in organizing the event with distinguished guest speakers and ceremonial displays to honor those who have served among our Portland community. Please see a synopsis of last year’s event here. In addition to the annual 24-hour vigil, we are planning an aircraft flyover performed by the Portland Air National Guard. We have also confirmed our guest speaker to be Brigadier General Donna M. Prigmore, the commander of the Oregon Air National Guard.
UP and Oregon Tech Finalize Air Force ROTC Crosstown Agreement
A crosstown agreement between University of Portland and Oregon Institute of Technology (Oregon Tech) was signed, according to Carolyn Strong, Air Force ROTC. A crosstown agreement allows students to attend an institution while simultaneously taking Air Force ROTC classes at the host university. The Air Force ROTC General Military Course and/or Professional Officer Course is available to qualified students of Oregon Tech who desire to earn appointments as commissioned officers in the United States Air Force. This is the first crosstown agreement that has been added in over 14 years.

Veterans Day Vigil, Ceremony: Nov. 10-11
The University of Portland will host its annual Veterans Day commemoration ceremony on Saturday, November 11, at 11 a.m., at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial. The ceremony will commence at the close of a 24-hour vigil at the Praying Hands, and is sponsored by the University’s Air Force and Army ROTC programs. It will recognize campus members who have served during times of war, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War veterans. The ceremony will include a guest speaker, National Anthem, and a 21-gun salute. Cadets stand vigil with one Army and one Air Force cadet standing attention at the Praying Hands, and the cadets switch off every half hour. All faculty, staff, students, and members of the public are welcome to attend. A reception will follow.

Colonel Christian Rees, Chief of Staff, Land Component Command of the Oregon Army National Guard, will be the featured speaker at the University’s annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11, at the Praying Hands Memorial. The ceremony, sponsored by the University’s Air Force and Army ROTC programs, will recognize campus members who have served during times of war, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War veterans. Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Rees was formerly director of installations for the Oregon Military Department. He earned a bachelor of science at Cornell University, an M.Arch. in architecture at the University of Oregon, and a master’s degree in strategic studies at the U.S. Army War College in 2012.
Also on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 2 p.m., the University will have calls for world peace at the International Peace Garden located outside of Buckley Center Auditorium. A few short readings will be given by international students, along with personal messages and prayers in their own languages and religions calling for world peace.

Veteran’s Day Vigil, Ceremony
Brigadier general Steven R. Beach will be the featured speaker at the University’s annual Veterans Day ceremony on Monday, November 11, at 11 a.m., at the Praying Hands Memorial. The ceremony, sponsored by the University’s Air Force and Army ROTC programs, will recognize campus members who have served during times of war, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War veterans.
The Veterans Day ceremony will take place after a 24-hour candlelight vigil with Air Force and Army cadets standing guard beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 10. The vigil ends at the end of the ceremony, at approximately noon on Monday.
Beach is the Assistant Adjutant General-Army, Oregon National Guard. He has received numerous awards and decorations throughout his career, including the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation with four bronze oak leaf clusters, Iraq Campaign, Global War on Terrorism, and other medals.
The Praying Hands Memorial was built by the University’s Class of 1948, in honor of the 69 University of Portland students killed during World War II. The addition of each brick wall surrounding the memorial represents four different battles: World War I, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War.

New Faculty In AFROTC
Three new instructors have joined the faculty for the University Air Force ROTC detachment 695, according to Carolyn Strong, AFROTC.
Colonel Mark S. Bennett is professor of aerospace studies and commander of Detachment 695, where he instructs and mentors more than 120 member of the cadet wing.
Major Robert V. Reinebach is assistant professor of aerospace studies and serves as recruiting flight commander of Detachment 695, as well as serving as assitant operations officer.
Major L. Robert Moriarty is an assistant professor of aerospace studies, and also serves as an Air Force education flight commander. Please welcome them to the campus community.
