Prayers for Peace, Nov. 11

All are invited to come together on Monday, November 11, at 2 p.m., at the International Peace Garden by Buckley Auditorium as students, faculty, staff, and religious from our UP community offer prayers for peace in multiple languages and faith traditions. TLC Brownbag Lunch Session, This Tuesday, Nov. 12

TLC Brown Bag Discussion

The Teaching & Learning Collaborative will offer a bring-your-own-brownbag lunch conversation around “Navigating Worrying Conversations and Troubling Nonverbal Behaviors with Students” in the Murphy Room from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., this Tuesday, November 12, facilitated by Sarina Saturn, psychological sciences.

This session will contain information about real-life experiences of students and the Academic Network for Mental Health (ANMH).  The ANMH is a collaborative effort by staff and faculty members across the University designed to provide knowledge and trainings about recognizing students in emotional distress and providing available resources and referrals to help with mental health issues. Veterans Day Vigil, Ceremony: Nov. 10-11

Veterans Day Vigil Ceremony 2019The University of Portland will host its annual Veterans Day commemoration ceremony on Saturday, November 11, at 11 a.m., at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial. The ceremony will commence at the close of a 24-hour vigil at the Praying Hands, and is sponsored by the University’s Air Force and Army ROTC programs. It will recognize campus members who have served during times of war, including World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, and Gulf War veterans. The ceremony will include a guest speaker, National Anthem, and a 21-gun salute. Cadets stand vigil with one Army and one Air Force cadet standing attention at the Praying Hands, and the cadets switch off every half hour. All faculty, staff, students, and members of the public are welcome to attend. A reception will follow.

The Praying Hands Memorial was built by the University’s Class of 1948, in honor of the 69 University of Portland students killed during World War II.

Honors Program Mentors Needed

Graphic for MentorsFaculty members are invited to serve as Honors Program mentors. Faculty mentors assist with selecting the incoming honors class, are assigned two incoming honors student mentees, and are encouraged to meet with them on a regular basis during the students’ first two years at the University.

“How Are You Teaching, Researching, Learning About Race?,” Nov. 12

Jann Murray-GarcíaClinical professor Jann Murray-García of the UC-Davis Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing will present “How Are You Teaching, Researching, and Learning About Race?” on Tuesday, November 12, at 3 p.m., in the Brian Doyle Auditorium. Murray-García will visit as part of the School of Nursing’s 85th Anniversary Speaker Series.

In 1998, with Melanie Tervalon, Murray-García introduced the now foundational concept of Cultural Humility in her most-oft cited publication, “Cultural Humility versus Cultural Competency: A Critical Distinction in Defining Physician Training Outcomes in Multicultural Education” (Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, 1998). This work has implications beyond nursing in the realms of intercultural understanding, inclusion, and diversity.

In celebration of the School of Nursing’s 85th anniversary, our first guest speaker, Jann Murray-Garcia, will be visiting campus on Monday, November 11, 2019, to discuss “Cultural Humility and Interrupting Scripts of Inequality.” Murray-García is a pediatrician and a founding faculty member and associate health sciences clinical professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis. Provost’s Initiative for Undergrad Research: New Deadline

John Orr, Assistant ProvostFaculty members are invited to apply for one of ten spring 2020 Provost’s Initiative grants for support to collaborate with an undergraduate on a co-designed research project during the spring semester 2020. Students are expected to meet and work with the faculty member weekly. Students will enroll in a 493 course and will earn a minimum of 1-credit for their work on the project and produce an artifact (research paper, lit review, or presentation etc.) appropriate to the discipline. (Note 1 credit hour typically requires 45 hours of work on the project, which includes faculty meeting time). Faculty members who are new to undergraduate research at University of Portland will receive $1,500 for mentoring the student in research, while experienced faculty members will be compensated $1,000.

Free Screening: “Trans Dudes with Lady Cancer,” Nov. 18

The School of Nursing’s International Education, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (IEDI) will offer a free screening of “Trans Dudes with Lady Cancer,” a short film documenting the journey of two transmasculine people, their families, and communities as they navigate breast cancer and ovarian cancer within the medical system. The screening will be on Monday, November 18, 5:30-7:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons. Find out more at the film’s Eventbrite and Facebook pages. A Q&A with Erin Waters and guest panelists will follow.
