In order to provide a safe and secure environment at University of Portland events, new security measures are being implemented at all Pilot athletic events, as well as other major events held in the Chiles Center this year. The measures went into effect beginning with the women’s soccer exhibition match against the University of British Columbia on Friday, August 10.
Security measures include metal detectors at all entrances. Backpacks, duffel bags, or bags larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ will be prohibited, and fans are encouraged to utilize clear bags to expedite the screening process. Additionally, only factory sealed water bottles and empty water bottles are allowed, and the University will provide refillable water stations inside venues.
With the entry process possibly increasing the time it takes to enter the venue, Portland athletics encourages all fans to arrive early or utilize the designated express lanes that are intended for patrons that do not have any bags or large metal items such as cameras or tablets. People entering the stadium will be screened via walkthrough metal detectors or by utilization of hand wands when needed.
These proactive and preventative measures will enhance safety inside the venue and speed the security screening process for all fans. Metal detectors will enable security to move guests through checkpoints efficiently, and clear bags will allow those in attendance to easily and effectively check bags that are brought into the venue, while greatly reducing the chance for a faulty bag search.
All prohibited items should be left at home, including concealed weapons. For a full list of prohibited items, please click here.
