All faculty and staff are invited to help identify those alumni who should be recognized for making outstanding contributions to their professional fields, for their dedication to volunteer endeavors, or for their ongoing support of the University and its mission. Nominations are due by October 15, using this form.

New Security Measures Added at University of Portland Events

August 10, 2018

In order to provide a safe and secure environment at University of Portland events, new security measures are being implemented at all Pilot athletic events, as well as other major events held in the Chiles Center this year. The measures went into effect beginning with the women’s soccer exhibition match against the University of British Columbia on Friday, August 10.

Security measures include metal detectors at all entrances. Backpacks, duffel bags, or bags larger than 12″ x 12″ x 6″ will be prohibited, and fans are encouraged to utilize clear bags to expedite the screening process. Additionally, only factory sealed water bottles and empty water bottles are allowed, and the University will provide refillable water stations inside venues.

With the entry process possibly increasing the time it takes to enter the venue, Portland athletics encourages all fans to arrive early or utilize the designated express lanes that are intended for patrons that do not have any bags or large metal items such as cameras or tablets. People entering the stadium will be screened via walkthrough metal detectors or by utilization of hand wands when needed.

These proactive and preventative measures will enhance safety inside the venue and speed the security screening process for all fans. Metal detectors will enable security to move guests through checkpoints efficiently, and clear bags will allow those in attendance to easily and effectively check bags that are brought into the venue, while greatly reducing the chance for a faulty bag search.

All prohibited items should be left at home, including concealed weapons. For a full list of prohibited items, please click here.

For further questions, please contact the ticket office at x4687.

Campus Parking, Fall 2018

August 10, 2018

With the coming of fall semester, students will be returning to campus, and many will be living off campus and commuting to their classes. As in past years, parking at the University is very limited. This fall, commuters will find the parking availability further stressed. Construction of Dundon-Berchtold Hall will limit parking along the main entryway and create traffic issues until completion in 2019.

Students who commute to campus are required to park on campus, not in the surrounding neighborhood. We offer a Franz Campus Parking Incentive for students who are willing to park in the Franz Campus parking lot (previously called the River Campus parking lot). The University is offering 100 free parking permits limited to that lot only. These permits will be available on a first come, first served basis beginning August 15.  There is a shuttle that runs to and from the Franz Campus parking lot to the Pilot House and back, hours yet to be determined. Students and faculty and staff are also encouraged to explore other options for their commute, including carpooling, cycling, or public transportation.

Please contact public safety at publicsafety@up.edu for more information.

Campus Resource Fair, Aug. 16: Participants Welcome!

August 10, 2018

The Office of Residence Life will be hosting their annual Campus Resource Fair during resident assistant training on Thursday, August 16, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., on the Terrace Room patio. All campus partners are invited to participate. This is an opportunity to connect resident assistants (RAs) to as many campus partners as possible, who can share information on how they can support the RAs in programming efforts, and for RAs to assist in getting each campus department’s name and mission out to on-campus residents.

If you are interested in having a table at this year’s Campus Resource Fair, please contact Bryn Rose at roseb@up.edu by Thursday, August 9.

Free Performance of “SCARS,” August 15

August 10, 2018

Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C., is happy to announce the performance of the new therapy version of his play, SCARS, on Wednesday, August 15, 7-9 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The performance is free and all are welcome.

Drama therapist Elliot Maxwell from Montreal will play the role of Eric.

SCARS is a play based on interviews with active duty military men. The goal of the program is to help family members and others better understand the veteran’s personal suffering and emotional scars, as well as the painful impact of post-traumatic stress on their relationships.

Off-Campus Undergraduate Research Request

August 10, 2018

All faculty members who wrote a letter of recommendation for a student to pursue off-campus research this past summer are requested to please send the student’s name to ur@up.edu. As the University prepares for its next accreditation visit, there is a need for better data on student participation in undergraduate research.

The University has made great strides in tracking on-campus undergraduate research, but the undergraduate scholarly engagement office needs faculty assistance in identifying which students participate in research off-campus. The office will follow up with students for more details about their experience; all they need from faculty are student names.

For more information, contact John Orr (orr@up.edu) in the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement.

Oui, Whee, We: Holy Cross Pilgrimage

August 10, 2018

The first dozen participants in this summer’s pilgrimage to the birthplace of Holy Cross came back transformed, ready to infuse what they learned into their work on campus and relationships with their students and colleagues. For ten days, they walked in the footsteps of Basil Moreau in LeMans, Chartres, and Basse-Normandie, and spent time on Mont St. Michel, Arromanches, and Bayeaux reflecting on their roles as co-disciples living out the charisms of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Support was provided by the Garaventa Center, provost’s office, SOPHIA, and the University’s deans.  This link will take you to a 4-minute video of highlights.

For more information on the potential for another senior faculty pilgrimage, please contact Karen Eifler in the Garaventa Center at eifler@up.edu.

Construction & Traffic Update

August 10, 2018

Construction crews have been very busy this summer completing much of the new roadway and plaza work and erecting the steel frame for Dundon-Berchtold Hall, according to Jim Ravelli, University operations. Steel erection and pouring of concrete floors for the building are expected to be complete on August 27, just in time for the start of the Fall 2018 semester, and workers will then move on to the next phase of construction, which will be interior framing.

Much of the roadway and plaza improvements were completed this summer and the new roadway reopened for one-way traffic to Waldschmidt Hall on August 17 with construction fencing moved back to its position prior to the end of the school year. The Kenna entrance is again an “exit only” and the right hand turn to enter from Willamette will no longer be allowed. That one-way road will be in place through the completion of the project in June 2019.

For more information contact Ravelli at ravelli@up.edu.
