Nicole Ralston Named Engineering Unleashed Fellow

Nicole Ralston, education, has been named as a 2020 Engineering Unleashed Fellow by the Kern Family Foundation. According to the foundation, “The designation as Engineering Unleashed Fellow recognizes leadership in education. Dr. Ralston is truly an ambassador of excellence for the University of Portland and is distinguished both through a Fellows Project and through interactions with the greater Engineering Unleashed community.”

Engineering Unleashed is a community of 3,100 faculty members from 160 institutions of higher education, powered by KEEN, a 50-partner collaborative that shares a mission to graduate engineers with an entrepreneurial mindset who are equipped to create societal, personal, and economic value.

The Engineering Unleashed Faculty Development workshops are elements of the multi-institutional activities. Ralston’s workshop, “Innovating Curriculum With Entrepreneurial Mindset,” presented  August 12-15, 2019 (Milwaukee, WI), impressed her peer coaches and they nominated her as an Unleashed Fellow. This select group of fellows represents approximately one in ten of all faculty development attendees.

Family STEM Day, KDP Literacy Fair: Feb. 23

Kids and their families are invited for fun, hands-on reading and STEM activities at the Literacy and STEM fair hosted by KDP, the School of Education, and the UP STEM Education and Outreach Center on Sunday, February 23, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Chiles Center. Every child will leave with a book, crafts, new knowledge, and even more questions.

 

MA HESA Information Session, July 23

The master of arts in higher education and student affairs (MA HESA) program offers a professional pathway to advance your career goals as an effective administrator, educator, and leader in higher education. With a rolling admissions process, students can begin in fall, winter, or summer terms. Read more on our program page. 

All are welcome to join education professor Eric Anctil for an information session on Tuesday, July 23, at 6 p.m., in Franz Hall room 452 (Siegfried Conference Room). Register to attend online. Watzke Accepts Graduate School Dean Position

School of Education dean John Watzke has agreed to accept an additional appointment as Dean of the Graduate School, according to University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C. His appointment is effective immediately.

Watzke has ably led the School of Education (SOE) since 2010. During that time, the SOE has frequently been home to the University’s largest population of graduate students. He has successfully launched several community engagement programs, established a doctoral program, and built upon the SOE’s reputation for excellence. Recently, he led institutional efforts in support of Strategy B of UP’s strategic plan, “Vision 2020.”  Strategy B focuses upon expanding the University’s relevant, excellent, and self-sustaining graduation education programs.

Please join the UP administration in thanking and congratulating John Watzke for accepting this additional responsibility to serve the UP community.

2019 Summer Learning Program: July 1 to Aug. 1

Each summer, the School of Education sponsors a tutoring program for later elementary, middle, and high school students.  The program is held on campus and, this year, it will run Monday-Thursday, July 1-August 1, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.  Students entering grades 4-11 in 2019-20 will work with tutors who are master of arts in teaching (MAT) program candidates. The MAT students/tutors work with students on their learning needs in math, reading, writing, speaking, and other subjects. If you would like to register your child online, you may do so here.

Rumble in the Jungle: Reading and STEM Fair, Feb. 24

The University’s annual Reading Fair will take place on Sunday, February 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Chiles Center. “Rumble in the Jungle” will be a reading fair and family STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) day hosted by Kappa Delta Pi and the UP STEM Education and Outreach Center. The fair is freeand open to all children from preschool through 8th grade.

There will be crafts, a principal reading, hands on-experiments, and a robotics demonstration. In addition to these activities, there will also be fun games, and opportunities to win prizes. Students will leave the event with a free book and gift from both organizations as a thank-you for attending.

This is a new combined event you do not want to miss. Why Theology Needs Hipsters, Feb. 6

School of Education doctoral fellow Danielle Trollinger presents a humorous look at what hipsters have to offer the field of theology in her Beckman Humor Project event on Wednesday, February 6, at 7:15 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120.

Hipsters are drawn to craft beer, obscure cheeses, organic farms, hand-dipped candles, unconventional socks, and homemade preserves. They love the authentic, the vintage, and the obscure, which is exactly why theology needs them. Prior to attending UP, Trollinger taught theology for six years at a Catholic high school in Colorado, earning the Cura Personalis Teacher of the Year award for her commitment to teaching the whole person. That commitment infuses her current scholarly work on human formation, language and imagination.

Stacey Boatright Farewell Party, Sept. 7

The School of Education is hosting a farewell gathering for Stacey Boatright on Friday, September 7, at 3:30 p.m., in Franz Hall room 120. All are welcome to come wish Stacey good luck and farewell as she transitions to a new position as director of administration and strategic communication at the Oregon Alliance for Independent Colleges & Universities.

Stacey began her career at UP in the School of Nursing in 2005, immediately after earning her bachelor’s degree in organizational communication from UP. Stacey moved to the School of Education in 2014 as administrative assistant to administration and staff and was promoted to programming and operations manager in 2015. In 2016, she was awarded UP’s highest staff honor, the Margaret Henzi Award for administrative/office support employees who perform their job in an exemplary manner.

The University’s annual Reading Fair will take place on Sunday, February 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Chiles Center. “Exploring the World through Reading and STEM” will be a reading fair and family STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) day hosted by Kappa Delta Pi and the UP STEM Education and Outreach Center. The fair is open to all children from preschool through 8th grade.

There will be cultural crafts from around the world, a principal reading, hands on-experiments, and a robotics demonstration. In addition to these activities, there will also be fun games, opportunities to win prizes, and an airplane photo booth. Students will leave the event with a free book and gift from both organizations as thank you for attending.
