A collective gasp spread through the campus at the news of John Furey, marketing and communications, retiring at the end of this month. Furey, “the man, the myth, the legend,” has seen the University grow and change over his 19 years on The Bluff. Renowned around campus and beyond as “Everyone’s best friend,” Furey has long been an essential part of the marketing and communications team. His boisterous laugh, his endless amount of yarns and tall tales, and his unwavering love of both the Pilots and the Beavers will be missed.
Marketing and communications will host a Farewell Furey party in the Terrace Room on Wednesday, January 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. All are welcome to come and wish Furey the very best as he begins this next phase of his epic journey of life.

Novelist, essayist, and Portland Magazine editor Brian Doyle has won a 2016 Pacific Northwest Book Award for his essay collection, Children and Other Wild Animals, according to the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association. Described as “…quirky prose at once lyrical, daring, and refreshing…poignant but not pap, sharp but not sermons, and revelatory at every turn…there is humor and humility and a palpable sense of wonder,” Doyle’s book is entertainingly subtitled Notes on badgers, otters, sons, hawks, daughters, dogs, bears, air, bobcats, fishers, mascots, Charles Darwin, newts, sturgeon, roasting squirrels, parrots, elk, foxes, tigers and various other zoological matters.
A volunteer committee of independent booksellers chose six books from more than 250 nominated titles published in 2015; the six winners were chosen from a list of 12 finalists announced in November 2015. Doyle is the author of many books, including the novels Mink River and The Plover; The Grail, his account of a year in a pinot noir vineyard in Oregon; and The Wet Engine, a memoir about his infant son’s heart surgery and the young doctor who saved his life.
Among various honors for his work is inclusion in Best American Essays, Best American Science and Nature Writing, Best Spiritual Writing, and the Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Previous recipients of that award include Mary Oliver, Kurt Vonnegut, and Flannery O’Connor.

The marketing and communications team has won a Gold Medal in the Multimedia for Special Events category in the 2015 Communication Awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), District VIII. The winning entry was a video for the President’s Welcome event during Orientation, produced by Amy Shelly, Adam Guggenheim, Joe Kuffner, and Rachel Barry-Arquit.

Publications and videos produced by the marketing and communications office have won 2015 Communication Awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), district VIII, for colleges and universities in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, and all of western Canada.
Portland Magazine won a Silver award for general excellence, and a Bronze for the essay “Flying” by Dave Devine. The marketing team won a Bronze medal for the video “Discover who you want to be at UP” and Anna Lageson-Kerns won a Bronze for “Entrepreneur Scholars at University of Portland.”

Joe has been an integral part of the marketing team since joining the UP staff in 2009. He has nearly singlehandedly built the UP social media presence, and if you scratch him he bleeds purple (please don’t try).

Sadness spread through the campus at the news of Mary Beebe, marketing and communications, accepting a position as marketing and communications manager at the Portland Children’s Museum. Mary has graced the University with her fabulous presence and hilarious catchphrases for the last eight years in the marketing department all while finishing her MBA in December 2013. Without Mary’s laugh, energy, and pranks, the third floor of Waldschmidt will be mighty quiet. We will all miss her dearly.
University Relations will host a farewell party at the new Alumni House (5618 N. Strong St.) on Thursday, August 20, from 3-4 p.m. Please come by to say farewell and send Mary off onto her new adventure.
