As faculty prepare for fall semester, now is a great time to schedule library instruction for the best choice of dates and times. Librarians will work with you to tailor sessions to your students’ research needs. Classes will meet in the new library classroom on the second floor of the library. We have laptops that students can use, or they can use their own wireless-enabled devices, to gain hands-on experience. To schedule instruction, contact Stephanie Michel at 7418 or michel@up.edu.

Library Closure for Final Move
The reopening of the Clark Library is just around the corner, but first we must close to the public from August 2-11, according to Diane Sotak, library. This will give library staff a chance to move into the building and test drive the facility before reopening on August 12. The paging service and pick-ups for Summit materials will also be suspended on August 1, so please plan accordingly if know you will need something during the closure. Our usual online resources will still be available, as well as interlibrary loan (ILL) service for article requests.
For more information contact the library at 7111 or library@up.edu, or go to http://library.up.edu.
New University Museum Display
All are invited to view a display of selections from the University Museum, located in the display case across from the Shepard Freshman Resource Center on the first floor of Buckley Center. Included in the display of photographs and memorabilia are Clive Charles’ Portland Timbers jersey from when he played for the Timbers (pictured) prior to coaching UP men and women’s soccer, some letterman sweater emblems from the 1950s, and vintage film equipment. To see more historical artifacts and photographs, all are welcome to visit the University Museum in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014. Hours are Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; or by appointment. For more information contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at 8038 or piatz@up.edu.
Library Seating Nearly Doubles
Most of the furniture for the renovated Clark Library has been delivered and is in the process of being assembled and arranged, according to Diane Sotak, library. The previous building had seating for 400 and now there is a wide variety of seating for 700. The seating is colorful and includes task chairs, easy chairs, booths, and couches. The next phase will be installing the technology hardware, such as computers, flat screens, and digital lab equipment. For more information contact the library at 7111 or see the “Transforming the UP Library” blog at http://wordpress.up.edu/library/.
From Our Past
Rev. Joseph J. Boyle, C.S.C., eighth president of the University of Portland, died suddenly of complications from a stroke on July 3, 1936. He was in Mason City, Iowa, where he had gone to visit family. He had been appointed president of the institution in 1934 and was still serving in that position when he died at the age of 54. He was about to accept an invitation to teach at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC when he learned of his new duties at the Congregation’s university in Portland. He was enthusiastic about his appointment to the Pacific Northwest and reportedly told the Morning Oregonian newspaper: “I became a citizen of Oregon this morning when the North Coast Limited crossed the Columbia River into the State, and I became a citizen of Portland when I stepped from the train.” In his first year as president the four-year University program was fully accredited. In his second year he authorized the change of the college’s name from Columbia University to the University of Portland in order to be more closely identified with the city. He later initiated a fund raising campaign for the Science Building, now Romanaggi Hall. He died two weeks after construction began, the first University of Portland president to die in office.

$50,000 Galarneau Gift
University of Portland has announced a RISE Campaign gift of $50,000 from Donald T. Galarneau, a 1949 University graduate who worked at General Electric Company for 35 years as a field engineer. The gift will be divided equally to help renovate the Clark Library and for the Shiley School of Engineering.
A Portland resident, Galarneau earned a degree in physics at the University and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. His interests at the University of Portland include the engineering and science programs and the Mini Baja Project. He often attends University reunions and events and is involved with the local Catholic radio station KBVM.
The library renovation and rebuilding project began in May 2012 and is expected to cost an estimated $12.5 million. The library was closed during the 2012-2013 academic year, and is set to reopen in August 2013. Library services have been offered during the interim year.
The renovated library will help facilitate new tools and resources for the University’s students. While maintaining a similar infrastructure, many aspects of the library will change from the renovation. The new library entrance will face the Academic Quad and will be open for students 24 hours a day.
The Galarneau gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million by 2014. The RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $158 million to date, is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.

Museum Hours For Reunion 2013
The University museum will be open for special hours on Saturday, June 22, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., during the 2013 Alumni Reunion. All are welcome to visit the museum in the basement of Shipstad Hall, room 014. The museum contains photographs and memorabilia illustrating the University of Portland’s historical, religious, social, and educational history. In addition to the regular collection there are special exhibits and displays in the museum and Shipstad Hall. Contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at piatz@up.edu or 8038 for more information.
Campus Authors, Scholarly Activity Tool
The Clark Library will be using the publication data entered in the newly launched Scholarly Activity Tool to create the annual UP Authors Bibliography by the end of June. Previously library personnel gathered most of this information from the University Report that came out in May. Faculty are strongly encouraged to enter their publications in the new tool by June 15, so the data is available as library staff prepare for the Fifth Annual UP Authors Reception. To learn more about this annual event, please go to http://tinyurl.com/mrnvnnb.
Library Collection Moving Back, June 10-28
The library’s storage collection will be moved into the renovated building during the weeks of June 10 through June 28. Limited paging will be available during that time, so if you know of storage books you need, please request them before June 10. The full paging service will resume by late June. To minimize the impact on summer session, the Terrace Room will remain open through August 1, and then will close for the final phase of the move. The tentative date for reopening the building is August 12. The end is in sight!
Library Instruction For Summer
Librarians are here on campus during the summer and can work with faculty to tailor library instruction sessions for their students’ research needs. Classes meet in the library classroom (Franz 330), which have laptops that students can use to gain hands-on experience. For classes larger than 30, library staff will reserve other computer classrooms on campus. To schedule instruction, contact Stephanie Michel at 7418 or michel@up.edu.
