Film Screening and Discussion: “Everybody’s Work: Healing What Hurts Us All” (Sept. 19)

Open Position: Core Team Faculty for Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inclusive Excellence Grant (Sept. 20)

The core team for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Inclusive Excellence (HHMI-IE3) grant is seeking one more faculty member. The grant funds 134 participating institutions who work together in seven “learning community clusters” aimed at creating inclusive STEM learning environments.  The University of Portland’s cluster specifically focuses on the challenge of meaningful evaluation of effective and inclusive teaching, which will inform faculty practices, including promotion and tenure decisions. Apply to the Rural Immersion (Due Sept. 22)

The Moreau Center would like to invite all students to apply to go on the Rural Immersion this Fall Break. The immersion will take place October 12-17 in Washington’s Yakima Valley. This immersion is a great opportunity to engage with different social justice themes, including challenges faced by undocumented and migrant farmworkers, sustainable farming practices, and United States immigration law. Open Call: Faculty Interested in AI and Ethics (Sept. 23)

Building on several successful College of Arts and Sciences initiatives that bring together Artificial Intelligence and Ethics in conversation, CAS is hosting the AI and Ethics Working Group on September, 23 from 1-2:30 p.m. in BC 215. We will continue conversations that began this summer regarding faculty research, grant planning, and curricular innovation related to AI and Ethics. All interested faculty are invited to join. OPEN HOUSE: StockUP Student Food Pantry (Sept. 23)

The mission of the StockUP Food Pantry is to address food insecurity on our campus. This shopping-style food pantry provides free access to supplemental food and some basic hygiene necessities for UP students. Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice in the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, facilitated a multi-day series of invited leadership development workshops for the staff team at Lutherhaven Ministries in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Houglum led six interactive sessions focused on DiSC-informed leadership, coaching-centered leadership, servant leadership and accompaniment, powerful feedback, and the co-creation of team commitments to support healthy culture and sustainable impact. In addition, Houglum provided multiple individual leadership coaching sessions for staff members throughout the engagement. January 2026.

Fr. Pat Hannon, CSC, published From Glory to Glory: A Pilgrim’s Notes From the Badlands of Grace.
