Let’s Get Off To A Healthy Start
The University Health Center would like to offer a few reminders to help faculty, staff, and students stay healthy.
A fever is a sign of illness. If you have a fever you need to be at home to prevent sharing your illness. If you are ill with a fever it is recommended you contact your health care provider. Students should be encouraged to call the health center for advice. Ebola has been in the news frequently after a prolonged outbreak in Africa. If you or someone you know develops a fever after travel to West Africa, please call your health care provider for advice.
This is also a good time to make sure you are up to date on your immunizations. Check with your health care provider to see if you need additional vaccinations.
Watch for the flu vaccination clinics on campus coming in October. Protecting yourself will help to keep our campus healthy and our classrooms full of healthy learners.
Hand washing is an effective tool to help reduce the spread of disease.

Library Hours For Fall 2014
The Clark Library will close at midnight during the first two weeks of the fall semester. Starting September 7, the library will be open until 2 a.m. on Sundays through Thursdays for the rest of the semester. During those wee hours, the building is accessible using the card swipe reader to the left of the main entryway. For more information contact the library at 7111 or go to library.up.edu.

Main Entry Updates
Just in time for the start of school, the upgrade to the main campus entrance is now open in both directions and the paving and concrete work is complete, according to Jim Ravelli, university operations. While the major work has been finished, there are still about three weeks remaining to complete all project elements. The remaining work will be centered around completing the landscaping and installing the monuments near the entrance. Additionally, workers will be re-pouring curbs and sidewalks along Willamette Boulevard on either side of the entrance. There may be times during the concrete work that visitors may experience a small delay entering or leaving the main entrance but there will be no closures to the entrance for this work and a flagger will be directing traffic as needed. Please note, in order to facilitate the move-in of our students and not to disrupt orientation activities, all work has been suspended until Tuesday, August 26.
The work schedule includes:
- Week of August 25th: Complete landscaping planting and irrigation testing in median and next to sidewalks; begin curb and sidewalk work along Willamette (note there may be an occasional delay at the entrance as we complete this portion of the project); begin monument installation.
- Week of September 2nd: Complete monument installation; install lamp posts; complete raingarden and associated landscaping.
- Week of September 9th: Complete sidewalk and curb work along Willamette; final cleanup.

Faculty Deferred Pay Option
All nine-month faculty members can opt in to be paid over a 12 month span, according to Debbie Schwartzkopf, payroll. This process begins with September paychecks and holds a portion aside for nine months, then pays out over June, July, and August of the following summer. To sign up for this option you can download the form from the payroll website at: http://tinyurl.com/ny77r98 or come into the payroll office to fill out a paper form. Faculty who sign up for this program remain enrolled until they give written notice that they do not want to participate in the program. There is no need to renew each year.
All forms must be submitted to the payroll office no later than Monday, September 15, 2014 to be eligible for the 2013-2014 academic year. Contact payroll at 8338 or payroll@up.edu.
From Our Past
Fr. Michael Quinlan, C.S.C. (pictured), the second president and first Holy Cross president of the University of Portland, died on August 29, 1944, at age 70. He served as president from 1902 to 1906, succeeding Fr. Edward P. Murphy, a Portland archiocesan priest who had been appointed president by archbishop Alexander Christie. Fr. Quinlan’s tenure proved to be difficult, due mostly to a clash of personalities with Archbishop Christie. Both were plain-spoken men with no use for diplomacy. Fr. Quinlan was succeeded in 1906 by Rev. Joseph A. Gallagher, C.S.C., who served as president until 1914.
Also, on August 30, 1964, the first group of UP students departed for the University’s program in Salzburg. Under the guidance of the program’s first resident director, Fr. Ambrose Wheeler, C.S.C., the group would travel to Scotland to begin a tour that would take them through England and the continent before arriving in Salzburg.
