The culmination of this year’s Read UP series on How To Be An Anti-Racist was a wide-ranging conversation between author Dr. Kendi and the UP community, deftly facilitated by student Grace Adams and Dr. Eduardo Contreras on March 31. Their questions and Dr. Kendi’s responses were recorded in this 1 hour video now available for viewing, which will be available for just two weeks on the ReadUP website (link will be removed April 16). DVDs of the conversation are also available for checkout from Clark Library, and will remain a permanent part of the collection there.

UP Active Minds Chapter Awarded National Health Equity Award
The UP Active Minds chapter was awarded the Health Equity Award at the organization’s national conference in Washington, D.C. Active Minds is a national nonprofit organization that supports mental health awareness and education for young adults with over 600 chapters across the country. This week we offer you a seasonal glimpse into The Saint John’s Bible’s “The Resurrection” illumination as a chance for Visio Divina. Core Revitalization Course Changes and Advising Notes
As we get ready for Spring registration, there are a few curricular changes associated with the implementation of the revitalized University Core Curriculum that may be helpful for faculty and staff to keep in mind during the upcoming advising period. Note that general information about the revitalized Core is available at https://pilots.up.edu/group/core-curriculum, including a summary of Core changes pre- and post-2021. While all current students will stay on the existing Core through to graduation for their University requirements, several classes are changing to accommodate the new curricular design being implemented for incoming students next Fall. Most notably, these include:
- FA 207: Introduction to Fine Arts is turning into two courses: FA 107: The Creative Process in Visual Art and FA 108: The Creative Process in Performative Art. The Core requirement is for students to take one of these two courses.
- SW 205: Social Welfare and Social Justice is becoming SW 101: Social Work and Social Justice. The course will continue to fulfill a social science Core requirement for existing students, and will be one option to fulfill the ‘Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and the Common Good’ requirement for incoming first-year students next year.
- A number of courses are changing titles to better reflect themes in the revitalized Core, including THE 105: Introduction to Theology which is becoming THE 105: Engaging Ultimate Questions: Religion, Faith, and Ethics. Courses with new titles will continue to count for existing Core requirements.
If any related advising questions arise, feel free to contact Andrew Guest (guesta@up.edu) in his Core Director role.
TLC Teaching Tip of the Week: Citation Help with RefWorks
As we approach the end of spring semester, your students may be working on major research projects. (Or, looking ahead to summer, you may have some research and writing projects of your own planned). Citing sources is often a less-favored aspect of the research process; the library’s RefWorks database can help! As an alternative to creating citations from scratch or using free online citation generators, RefWorks is a web-based tool for collecting and organizing your sources and creating pre-formatted bibliographies in hundreds of citation styles (including all the major styles, as well as many journal-specific citation formats). As a bonus for students, RefWorks allows alumni to continue to access their RefWorks account after they graduate.
Clark Library’s RefWorks guide offers guidance and brief online tutorials about getting started, organizing references, reading and annotating, and sharing and collaborating with RefWorks. Additionally, learn about tools for writing papers with RefWorks; these optional plug-ins integrate into Microsoft Word or Google Docs to assist with formatting in-text citations (or footnotes) as well as bibliographies.
If you or your students would like a guided overview of RefWorks, please contact us at reference@up.edu or make an appointment to meet with a librarian.

Public Humanities at UP: Imagining PRF’s Future, April 8
What are the “Public Humanities”? How have UP faculty and students participated in Public Humanities work? And how might the Public Humanities enable or inspire your own thinking, learning, and teaching—and be mutually enriching for you and for the public? The organizers of the Public Research Fellows program invite you to join a discussion of these questions and more on Thursday, April 8 from 4-5:15 p.m. at this Zoom link. We’ll be sharing some pillars of the public humanities, giving an overview of how the PRF program has enacted these, and inviting input from participants about other ways of envisioning Public Humanities work at UP and beyond. Whether you’ve been involved in this work before, have been merely curious about it, or are even skeptical about the need for anything called “public humanities,” we’d love to hear your insights.
All members of the UP community–faculty, staff, and students–are welcome.
Reminder: Proctorio Available for Campus Wide Use
As we approach finals, the ATSI team would like to remind you that Proctorio, an online proctoring solution, is available for use with exams given via Moodle. This solution will allow you to flag certain behaviors for observation by the plugin, which will submit reports to you following your exam to review any questionable activity which it observes based on criteria you set. Use of this program makes proctoring and administering of online exams more flexible since you do not need to sit online with your students to observe via Zoom or Teams.
More information on using the Proctorio online proctoring option can be found on the ATSI Online Testing and Proctoring page on PilotsUP.
