Visio Divina Contemplative Prayer Sessions For Advent

visio divinaThe Garaventa Center and Campus Ministry invite all members of the UP community to step away from the frenzy of the season for Visio Divina on Wednesdays during Advent, 12:45 and 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Visio Divina, which means “sacred seeing,” is an ancient form of contemplative prayer centered on sacred images. It is rooted in monastic tradition.

Participants will experience the Divine in images from the University’s Saint John’s Bible, a different one each week. Visio Divina asks only for our silent presence; each session lasts about 30 minutes.

Alumni Advent Mass, Dec. 14

1chapel150Join the Office of Alumni Relations on Sunday, December 14 at the University of Portland’s Chapel of Christ the Teacher for the annual Advent Mass for alumni of colleges and universities guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross. Nicaragua Immersion Silent Auction, Dec. 1-5

nicaragua2The Nicaragua Immersion Silent Auction and Gift Basket Raffle will take place from Monday, December 1 through Friday, December 5, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons hallway. Proceeds of the Silent Auction & Gift Basket Drawing benefit UP students who will be going on the Nicaragua Immersion in May 2015. The students are responsible for fundraising for this valuable learning experience, and the Silent Auction is one of their largest fundraisers. Last year many departments on campus generously and imaginatively created fabulous gift baskets to be included in the silent auction. Individuals (crafters or shoppers) are encouraged to donate an item to be included in the gift basket to be raffled off to one lucky winner.

Campus Ministry Events, Services, Celebrations

1chapel150Thanksgiving Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher at 10:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. This will replace the 12:05 p.m. daily Mass. All are invited to attend.

Voice for Life will be hosting their annual Stuff the Crib drive, to benefit the Mother & Child Education Center, from Monday, November 24 to Friday, December 5. Drop by the Pilot House, pick a tag off the crib, and make the holidays a little brighter for families in need. Any questions can be addressed to Margaret or Julia at voiceforlifeup@gmail.com.

Join campus ministry for an early celebration of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and a special devotion for Mexicans and Mexican-Amer­icans. A bilingual Mass will take place on Thursday, December 4, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Mass will be followed by a gathering featuring hand-made tamales, pan dulce, and Mexican hot chocolate. All are welcome.

Join Campus Ministry For Bells In The Ballroom, Dec. 5

New employee and staff portraitsAll faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends are welcome to come to Bells in the Ballroom, an annual musical celebration of the Christmas season, on Friday, December 5, at 7 p.m., in Mehling Ballroom. The event will feature Christmas cookies, cocoa, and music from the UP Chapel Choir, Handbell Choir, and the groups Call Our Bluff and Under A Rest. The Hallelujah Chorus will be accompanied by members of the UP Orchestra.

Mass of Remembrance, Nov. 18

up_stained_glass-37 2150Through the month of November, campus ministry invites the UP community to remember loved ones who have died. All are welcome to inscribe the names of loved ones on a card and place it in the accompanying basket to be placed near the altar in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher during a special Mass on Tuesday, November 18, at 4:45 p.m., and they will continue to be a focus of prayer throughout November.

“Pro-life Relational Apologetics,” Nov. 17

handshakeThe University’s student-led Voice for Life club will host a talk, “Pro-life Relational Apologetics,” on Monday, November 17, at 7 p.m., in St. Mary’s Student Center lounge. The talk will focus on cultivating friendships and encouraging dialogue about human rights injustices. The event features Josh Brahm and Deanna Unyk, who met online and sparked a friendship over 13 months, 127 e-mails, and more than 20 hours on Skype.

Brahm describes himself as a straight, Christian, pro-life advocate from California; Unyk as a gay atheist from Canada. The pair formed an unlikely friendship that led to Deanna’s pro-life conversion. They will meet face-to-face for the first time at this event and will speak about the things that make their friendship work and how to cultivate friendships with people of different faiths and political backgrounds. The event will be followed by a Q&A session.

This event is sponsored by the University’s Voice for Life club, with funding from the Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture, the Dundon-Berchtold Institute for Moral Formation & Applied Ethics, and Campus Ministry. Student leaders Margaret Persing and Julia Anderson brought the speakers on campus through the Garaventa Center’s Student Leadership Development Initiative. The fund aims to develop students’ capacities to write fundable grants, develop entrepreneurial orientations and expand programming that furthers the status of Catholic intellectual life on campus and in the region.

Hallelujah Chorus, Anyone?

New employee and staff portraitsAll musically minded and inspired UP faculty, staff, alumni, and friends are invited to lend their voices to the UP Chapel Choir’s annual Christmas concert, the “Bells in the Ballroom,” on Friday, December 5, at 7 p.m., in the Mehling Ballroom lounge, according to Maureen Briare, campus ministry. The choir will be singing the “Hallelujah Chorus” as the finale, and all who have sung it before are invited to join in the choir. Members of the University Orchestra will be accompanying several of the selections.

The concert is a fun time for UP families to enjoy Christmas cookies, hot cocoa, and the musical joy of the season, including the all-male UP accapella sensation, “Call Our Bluff.” Please contact Briare at 7335 or briare@up.edu if you would like to be a part of this chorus. All members will receive the musical score, and a web link to re-learn their parts.

Month Of Remembrance

Stations are placed in many offices around campus where anyone is welcome to inscribe the names of loved ones on a card and place it in the accompanying basket. The cards will be placed near the altar in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher during a special Mass on Tuesday, November 18, at 4:45 p.m., and they will continue to be a focus of prayer throughout November.
