A group of 40 students will be attending the March Encounter with Christ Retreat along with 21 student leaders from March 24-26. All faculty and staff are asked to consider writing a note (palanca) to the students they know on the retreat’s attendance list. It is an opportunity to encourage students and express appreciation for them outside the classroom. Each retreatant will receive an envelope of surprise palanca. Please do not discuss this concept with students to keep it a surprise. A list of those going on the retreat, along with their majors, can be found at this link. Please submit your palanca to the Campus Ministry office in St. Mary’s. Mark your envelope with “EWC Retreat—(student’s name)” and bring it by Thursday, March 23.

Shortly after his untimely death in 1989, University president Rev. Thomas Oddo, C.S.C., was memorialized by faculty, staff, students, and friends with the establishment of an endowed scholarship fund named after him. Every year the University awards scholarship funds in Fr. Oddo’s name to one or more students who meet a set of criteria which includes demonstrated commitment to service and to service learning. Wednesday, March 1 is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of the Season of Lent, a period of preparation leading into the Easter celebration of the saving mysteries for Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection. Masses will be offered on Ash Wednesday at 12:05 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. Masses will also be offered at 10:15 p.m. in Mehling, Kenna, and Schoenfeldt Halls.

Campus Ministry invites the campus community to celebrate the Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe on Monday, December 12. A Mass in Spanish (homily in English) will be offered at 4:45 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. After Mass the celebration will continue in St. Mary’s lounge with traditional food and a reenactment of the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. All are welcome.

Campus Ministry will offer Masses on the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, December 8, at 12:05 p.m. and 5 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the conception of Mary, who became the mother of Jesus Christ. It is one of the most important Marian feasts celebrated in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church and so all Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass as a part of the celebration.
Anyone who has sung the Hallelujah Chorus before, or who might like to learn it, is welcome to lend their voice with the Chapel Choir at this year’s “Bells in the Ballroom” concert. The concert, “Encores Away!,” featuring the sounds of the Chapel Handbell Choir, Chapel Choir, and the UP Acapella Choir, will definitely get you in the spirit of the Christmas season.
During the month of November, the Church traditionally remembers our beloved departed. We pray for the souls of our family and friends and give thanks for how we were blessed by their lives. Here at UP, we celebrate a Mass of Remembrance for all of the deceased members of the University Community. In a particular way we remember those who have passed away in the last year. This year’s Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated on Sunday, November 13, at 10:30 a.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
