Veronicca Solis Accepted into the Holy Cross Overseas Lay Ministry Program in Chile

March 17, 2013 By Linda

Veronicca Solis, a current Theology major and graduating senior, has been accepted into the Holy Cross Overseas Lay Ministry Program. She will be living and working in Chile for 17 months and is very excited to be a part of the program. She will be leaving for her mission sometime in July. The process was competitive; only 2-3 post-graduate applicants are accepted for Chile, and applicants must have a strong service record, be proficient in Spanish, and have a strong commitment to enhancing the three program pillars: prayer, mission, and community, among other criteria that was part of the application and review process.

Please join us in wishing Veronicca well as she prepares for her work with Holy Cross in Chile.

Winterreise Event

January 23, 2013 By Linda

Franz Schubert’s masterwork song cycle, Die Winterreise (Winter’s Journey) will be performed on Sunday, April 7th at 3pm in the Buckley Center Auditorium.  World famous accompanist and Professor Emeritus of the University of Illinois, John Wustman, will join new Asst. Professor Nicole Leupp Hanig in performing the set of twenty-four songs with texts by German Romantic poet Wilhelm Müller.  Associate Professor of German, Laura McLary, will begin the afternoon’s concert with insights on Müller’s poetry, which speaks of one who is cast out and forced to wander, unable to find journey’s end.

John Wustman’s professional musical career began in the 50’s with Robert Shaw and went on to include appearances in the leading concert halls of five continents with some of the greatest singers from the second half of this century.  His lengthiest associations were with singers such as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Birgit Nilsson, Régine Crespin, Christa Ludwig, Nicolai Gedda, Carlo Bergonzi and a twenty-five year collaboration with Luciano Pavarotti .  On January 31, 1997, Wustman completed a six-year series of recitals celebrating the 200th anniversary of Franz Schubert’s birth. This “labor of love”, as Wustman terms it, featured performances of each of the Viennese master’s 598 songs.  Nicole Leupp Hanig is honored that her mentor will accompany her in performance of Die Winterreise at University of Portland.

Sara Doran, Philosophy Alumnus

August 18, 2012 By Linda

“During my time as a philosophy student, I encountered a department brimming with passionate, engaging, diverse, and accessible professors who shared, perhaps, only two things in common: a shameless encouragement of intellectual curiosity and a sincere dedication to their students. No question, it seemed, was insignificant, and no topic was off-limits. This couldn’t have been a more empowering or engaging environment, fostering the organic development of critical analytic skills through the formulation of questions, synthesis of arguments, personal reflection, and utilization of formal logic.

Equally significant has been the way my professors have partnered with me to help me reach my goals after graduation. Since then, I’ve found my professors eager to come to my aid as I applied to law school and needed letters of recommendation written on my behalf. This autumn I will be attending Harvard Law School, an accomplishment I owe in part to the dedicated faculty who helped facilitate my success both as an undergrad and as an alumnus; I couldn’t be more grateful for the tools they’ve given me and their unyielding support.”
