Wind Symphony and Orchestra Concert, Oct. 4

symphonyThe University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform a concert on Saturday, October 4, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

The Wind Symphony program looks at the use of humor in music, including Percy Grainger’s whimsical Country Gardens, Paul Hart’s Cartoon, and Jonathan Newman’s “bubblegum pop” piece Single, featuring senior vocalist Amelia Segler. Rounding out the program is John Mackey’s Aurora Awakes, one of the most significant band works thus far in the 21st century.

The University Orchestra will feature Margaret Brouwer’s stirring and elegiac tone poem, Remembrances, as well as student concerto competition winner David Yee playing Alexander Glazunov’s Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone.

Music for a Winter’s Evening, Dec. 3

orchestra1The University of Portland Orchestra will present “Music for a Winter’s Evening” on Tuesday, December 3, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all. Please join orchestra members for a powerful journey of visual and aural art as they perform Mussorgsky’s iconic Pictures at an Exhibition, featuring the legend of Baba Yaga and The Great Gate of Kiev. They will also celebrate the season with Barber’s Die Natali: Chorale Preludes for Christmas and other holiday favorites. Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert

1aWindsymphony150The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Orchestra will perform in concert on Saturday, October 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public. In an all-Russian program, the Orchestra will feature student concerto competition winner Cem Inan playing Rachmaninoff Concerto no. 1, as well as selections from Stravinsky’s Firebird, and Lyadov’s 8 Russian Songs. The Wind Symphony program includes Joaquin Turina’s La Procession du Rocio and premiere performances of pieces by Anthony O’Toole and Benjamin Taylor. UP Orchestra Concert

The University of Portland Orchestra closes the 2012-2013 concert season with “Light out of Shadow,” a joint concert with the Choral Arts Ensemble of Portland. Performances are Saturday, April 20, at All Saints Parish, 3847 NE Glisan St., Portland, and Tuesday, April 23, in Buckley Center Auditorium, both at 7:30 p.m. The groups will perform Morten Lauridsen’s dramatic Lux Aeterna and Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5. Free Admission to the BC Auditorium concert only to UP employees and students with ID at the door; all other tickets can be purchased at caeportland.com or 503-488-3834.

Wind Symphony, Orchestra Concert

The University Wind Symphony and Orchestra will present “Heart, Healing, and Hope,” dedicated to health care organizations, and the classic tale of Peter and the Wolf, on Sunday, March 3, at 5 p.m., in Buckley Center auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.

Wind Symphony musical selections will include a world premiere by composer Martin Ellerby, and an American premiere by Daisuke Shimizu. The University Orchestra will feature the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Student concerto competition winner Ryan Chien will play Prokofiev’s dramatic Piano Concerto no. 1, followed by Proko­fiev’s most famous work, Peter and the Wolf, featuring UP’s very own provost, Tom Greene, as the narrator.
