The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is pleased to announce that the 2022 Teaching Award winner is Carolyn James, from the Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences. During her seven years on the bluff, she has taught a wide range of courses, including many taken by non-STEM students. Carolyn has excelled in the classroom, receiving high praise from both students and fellow faculty. She has been a leader on-campus in mentoring and otherwise encouraging faculty to use evidence-based pedagogy as they design and update their courses. She has also incorporated social justice topics into her math courses.
Comments from students include “Dr. James is by far the best math teacher/professor I have ever had,” and “I have struggled with learning math in the past, but Dr. James has figured out how to accommodate students of diverse learning styles.” Comments from faculty include “She is passionate, student-centered, engaged and engaging, and she is empathetic to the struggle of learning complex ideas and concepts” and “Each time she teaches, I learn so many new techniques it becomes hard to keep writing them down.” A fellow member of the NSF REFLECT project wrote, “She has been the primary driver for teaching excellence in a team of excellent teachers. Her teaching methods and techniques are impressive.”
