Theology Thursday Lecture, March 31

mcmanus copyThe next Theology Thursday lecture will be presented by senior theology major Jessica Brown and Sr. Kathleen McManus, OP, theology, on Thursday, March 31, at 7:30 p.m., in the Terrace Room. The lecture is free and open to all.

Brown and McManus will present “The Global Suffering of Women: An Ethical Imperative for the Church.” While the Catholic Church exercises incomparable influence for good throughout the world, they posit, the Church’s inherent patriarchal structure functions to reinforce oppressive social and cultural attitudes, thus contributing to the suffering of women.

The lecture came about with support of the Dundon-Berchtold Institute, which provided the research grant that has allowed Brown and McManus to collaborate on their project during this past academic year.

Retreat On The New Evangelization: Register Now

nieli copyThe University’s master of arts in pastoral ministry program is sponsoring “Retreat on the New Evangelization: Deepen Your Life in the Spirit and Learn Skills for Sharing Your Faith,” with Fr. Bruce Nieli, CSP (pictured), on April 17-19, at the Griffin Center in Milwaukie, Ore. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 27. A registration form is available at http://tinyurl.com/ozbhbjz.

There will also be a pre-retreat workshop, “Becoming Missionary Disciples: A Church Without Borders,” with Fr. Nieli on Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m., at St. Philip Neri Parish in Portland. Those who are registered for the retreat can waive the $10 workshop fee.

Theology Thursday Lecture

Sr. Kathleen McManus, OP, theology, will present “Light of Nations? Reading Lumen Gentium in the 21st Century” as part of the Theology Thurs­days lecture series on Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 310. The lecture is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Lumen Gentium (The Dogmatic Constitution on the Church), one of the principal documents of the Second Vatican Council, set forth a prophetic vision of the Church as sign and source of communion for the world. After tracing the evolution in ecclesiology that paved the way for Vatican II, and examining the theological evolution of the document itself, McManus will draw upon insights emerging from the interface of theology and evolutionary science in order to explore the fertile promise of Lumen Gentium for today’s paradoxically globalized yet painfully fragmented world.
