“Charming Billy” Book Discussions, Feb. 11, 19, 24

In preparation for the February 26 Schoenfeldt Distinguished Writers visit by author Alice McDermott, all UP community members are invited to the following book discussions facilitated by Fr. Charlie Gordon, C.S.C., Garaventa Center, in the Clark Library conference room:

Wednesday, February 11, 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Thursday, February 19, noon to 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday, February 24, noon to 1:30 p.m.

The ReadUP initiative encourages UP community members to read McDermott’s novel, Charming Billy, and to participate in these and other discussions. The Clark Library no longer has free copies available. For more information contact the provost’s office at 7105 or staten@up.edu.

New Garaventa Center Directors

The provost’s office has announced the appointment of Karen Eifler and Rev. Charles Gordon, C.S.C., as co-directors of the Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture, effective July 1, 2013.

Eifler is well known across campus and involved in many activities that speak to the very essence of the Center. She has been a board member and leader in Collegium, a national organization that explores issues similar to those explored by the Garaventa Center. Eifler and Norah Martin, College of Arts and Sciences, have led the Friday afternoon Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group for many years. Eifler is a respected and recognized teacher, author, and colleague. Her vast experience, inexhaustible creativity, deft organizational skills, and unquenchable thirst for knowledge and understanding will be assets in leading the Center forward.

Fr. Gordon is well-known for his public lectures in the region and his scholarly discussion groups. His students also find his classroom lessons stimulating and provocative. Cambridge educated and an expert in American culture from the sublime to the ridiculous as well as a widely respected Holy Cross priest, he will add his capacious set of attributes to advancing the Center.

Tuesday, October 28, 2024. Aihiokhai also presented: “The Theologian as a Voice of Sacramental Disruption: Embracing a Curious Imagination”; “Theology as a Sacramental Discipline of Disruption: Towards a Pedagogy for a Secular World”; “Holy Disruption: Black Bodies as Sacraments of Transformation.” Sankofa Institute Scholars Meet and Greet Event, Sankofa Institute/Oblate School of Theology. Anna Myers, Education, presented “Precise Feedback Instruction During Reading Intervention for Word Recognition, Fluency, and Comprehension.” Conference Session at the International Dyslexia Association. Dallas, TX. October, 2024.

Matthew Warshawsky, International Languages and Cultures, presented “‘A Woman So Perfect Keeping the Law’: The Crypto-Jewish Faith of Justa Méndez in Colonial Mexico.” The 34th Annual Conference of the Society for Crypto-Judaic Studies (presented virtually). October 27, 2024.

David Fuentes, Nursing and Health Innovations, presented “Bridging the Skills across Human and Artificial Intelligence Coaching Strategies to Boost Peer-Coaching & Self-Coaching Skills.” Co-presenter: Dave Houglum, PhD. Lightning Session of the Catholic Higher Education and AI Conference at University of Portland. The session briefly highlighted some of the innovations concerning the use of AI in leadership coaching, practice/training, and coaching ongoing developmental growth. October, 2024. Fuentes also presented: “Using Project Management Methodologies to Align General Education Assessment, Program Review, and Accreditation Simultaneously.”; “Systems-Thinking and Relationship Building to Address Accreditation and Institutional Efficiency.”; “Promoting Institutional Culture through Assessment Policy Development and Maximizing Stakeholder Engagement through Organizational Learning.” Co-presenters: S. Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, presented nine, one-hour invited leadership presentations for the European Leadership Programme in Brussels, Belgium. Houglum also provided individual leadership coaching sessions to many of the programme’s Fellows and to the staff of the Jesuit European Social Center (JESC). The European Leadership Programme draws emerging leaders from across Europe to participate in a five-month leadership development programme. October 12-16, 2024.

Andrew Eshelman, Philosophy, published “Reflection and Ideal Reasons-Responsiveness.” Special issue of Midwest Studies in Philosophy honoring the work of John Martin Fischer. October 8, 2024.

Jeffrey Gauthier, Philosophy, presented “Prostitution, Harm Reduction, and Male Entitlement” and “Comments on Virginia Moscetti, ‘Contracts and Sexual Promising: A Kantian Perspective.'” Northwest Philosophy Conference, Lewis and Clark College. November 2, 2024.
