Public Research Fellows “Engaging Portland” Showcase and Open House (Apr. 26)
Please join the Public Research Fellows in marking the end of another successful year of public-facing engaged humanities research at the 2024 Showcase from 3-5 p.m. at the Franz Patio and Lobby. This is an open-house style event open to all UP-community members with food, drinks, and a UP jazz trio with a special appearance by the bike-powered library from Street Books. Covert Gallery: Liberated Archives Reception (Mar. 21)
All are warmly invited to a reception in the Dr. James T. Covert Gallery on the main floor of the Clark Library to learn about our current exhibit, entitled Liberated Archives: Memory Work Partnership with Don’t Shoot PDX. Exhibit collaborators will speak about their work, including students and faculty in UP’s Social Justice Capstone course, Public Research Fellows, and local community organization Don’t Shoot PDX, with additional support provided by UP Ethnic Studies. The Public Research Fellows program invites all faculty to join us for an Engaged Humanities Lunch Conversation on the topic of technology in the classroom. While an ever-increasing reliance on tech often takes on an air of inevitability, there are compelling reasons to consider the effects of these shifts—on learning outcomes, on students’ mental health, on our abilities to make connections with one another as members of a classroom community. The Flickering Universe: An Evening with Pattiann Rogers, Robert Michael Pyle, and University of Portland Scholars
In her most recent book, poet Pattiann Rogers offers a fresh metaphor for the ephemeral nature of experience, time, and the human soul—flickering. Join Rogers and fellow naturalist and writer Robert Michael Pyle for a live online panel discussion about flickering and being. The panel will be moderated by University of Portland scholar Corey S.
