Performing and Fine Arts presents “Good Kids” by Naomi Iizuka

good-kidsThe performing and fine arts department presents Good Kids, with performances on Wednesday, October 5 through Sunday, October 9, 7:30 p.m. (except Sunday at 2 p.m.), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Set at a Midwestern high school, in a world of Facebook and Twitter, smartphones and YouTube, Good Kids explores a casual encounter gone wrong and its very public aftermath. Who’s telling the truth? Whose version of the story do you believe? And what does that say about you?

Faculty and staff can reserve complimentary tickets by showing UP identification cards; students can reserve free tickets for the Wednesday or Thursday shows with their UP student identification cards.

“Good Kids” Pre-Play Panel and Reception, October 8

good-kidsAll ticket holders for the Saturday, October 8 performance of “Good Kids” are invited to enjoy a complimentary wine and cheese reception prior to the play. Campus experts will highlight intriguing themes and production details. The reception begins at 6:15 p.m. with panel at  6:45 in Mago Hunt Recital Hall.

UP Orchestra, Wind Symphony Concert: Oct. 1

The University of Portland Music Program opens its 2016-2017 concert season on Saturday, October 1, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium with performances by the University Orchestra and Wind Symphony. The concert is free and open to all.

The Wind Symphony, under the direction of guest conductor and UP alumna Kylie Pybus, will feature lively folk dances set in large, symphonic form, including Alfred Reed’s Armenian Dances, David Holsinger’s Havendance, Jan Van der Roost’s Rikudim, and Eric Whitacre’s stirring October.

The Orchestra portion of the program, entitled, “Copland’s America,” will feature iconic works by Aaron Copland that defined the Americana sound of the mid-20th century.  The performance will include Fanfare for the Common Man, “Variations on a Shaker Melody” from Appalachian Spring, Four Dances from Rodeo, and selections from Our Town and The Tender Land.

Music at Midweek: Stephen Lancaster, Baritone

stephen_lancaster_headshot_2013_green-copyBaritone Stephen Lancaster will perform on Wednesday September 21, in Mago Hunt Recital Hall from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. His performance, part of the Music at Midweek series, is free and open to all.

Lancaster is an associate professor of voice at the University of Notre Dame. He has been featured in venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Chicago Cultural Center, Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Hall, Centro Cultural de Belém, Petit Palau de la Música Catalana, and Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall.

Fr. Ghyselinck Art Show reception, Aug. 24

ghyselinck copyThere will be an opening reception for Rev. Mark Ghyselinck, C.S.C.’s art show “Look Again,” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24 in the Buckley Center gallery. The event, hosted by the Garaventa Center, will feature opening remarks from Fr. Ghyselinck as well as wine and refreshments. All are welcome to attend. The show will feature a large collection of Fr. Ghyselinck’s landscape paintings featuring scenes of the UP campus, Oregon, Salzburg, and many places in Europe, Africa, and Australia.

Mock’s Crest Productions Presents “Ruddigore,” June 4-26

ruddigoreMock’s Crest Productions will present Gilbert and Sullivan’s operetta Ruddigore in Mago Hunt Center Theater on June 4-5, 10-12, 17-19, and 23-26. Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Thursday – Saturday and 2 p.m. Sundays. Dinner and brunch will be served on the lawn in front of the Hunt Center prior to show times. Tickets are available at Mago Hunt Box Office and can be ordered by phone at x7287 or online at magohuntboxoffice@up.edu.

Ruddigore is the classic Gilbert and Sullivan “Ghost” operetta. It follows the trials of Robin Oakapple, who fled Ruddigore to avoid inheriting its title and curse, which requires that the Baron must commit a crime every day or spend his nights in agony being tortured by the ghosts of his ancestors.

Mock’s Crest is a semi-professional company devoted to a yearly summer production of comic light opera, primarily the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan. It combines professional singers and musicians with students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts at the University of Portland. The production company was originally created under the guidance of the late Roger O. Doyle in 1990 with support of theater faculty as his production team.

Best In The Northwest Choir Fest, May 6

choirfest copyThe University and the performing and fine arts department will host the 42nd annual Best in the Northwest Choir Festival, Friday May 6, all day, in Buckley Center Auditor­ium. Choir members will also use first floor Buckley Center classrooms for robing and rehearsal. Top honors go to the finest middle and junior high school choirs from across the Northwest. Attendance is free but seating is limited at times.

An Evening of Soloists with the UP Orchestra, April 19

orchestraThe University Orchestra will present an evening of soloists on Tuesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all.

The concert will feature UP’s violin professor, Kevin Lefohn, playing Vaughan Williams’ gorgeous “The Lark Ascending.” Student concerto competition winners Taylor Kendig (soprano) and Jonathan Liao (piano) will also be featured, singing arias by Strauss and Verdi, and playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 24. The concert will also include George Lloyd’s 6th Symphony and William Walton’s “Crown Imperial March.”

“Julia Caesar” Set To Open April 8

comedydramaThe University theater program will present its next main stage production, “Julia Caesar,” on April 8-10 and 13-15, at 7:30 p.m. (Sundays 2 p.m.), in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Tickets are available through the Mago Hunt Center box office at x7287.

For centuries the classic Shakespeare play “Julius Caesar” has asked: Who should hold power? Who should decide who holds power? This contemporary exploration also asks: What if Caesar were a woman? What if Brutus were? When gender comes into questions of authority, what happens?

The all-student cast includes Adele Kennedy (Brutia), Michael Wardrop (Cassius), Emma Pace (Julia Caesar), Thomas Curran (Mark Antony), Dylan Hartwig (Portia/Antony’s Servant/Octavia), Sophia Aguirre (Octavia’s Servant/Cinna the Poet), Joel Anderson (Casca/Titinius), Jen Bigoness (Lucia/Clitia), Michael Flickner (Calpurnius/Popilius/Plebeian/Cato), Theresa Foley (Cobbler/Lucilia), Emily Hogan (Ligura/Pindara), Patrick Holland (Flavius/Trebonius/Plebeian/Messenger), Ellen Micek (Carpenter), Shaleesa Moreno (Soothsayer/Lepida), Eilidh Mote (Marulla/Artemidora/Strata), Jahsimara Rodriguez Poma (Plebeian/Dardana), and Maddie Tran (Cinna/Messala).

The play will be directed by Andrew Golla, with set design by Bethany Foran, costume design by Gregory Pulver, and lighting design by Tanis Gonzaga-Guzman.
