The performing and fine arts department is honoring Fr. Claude Pomerleau, C.S.C., with a memorial concert series beginning with globally acclaimed pianist Andreas Klein on Wednesday, October 9, at 7 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall. Klein will offer a recital entitled “Bach, Beethoven and Beyond. The concert series if co-sponsored by PFA and the Garaventa Center.

The next Music at Midweek event will feature TaKeTiNa, a rhythmic workshop with Mary Kogen (pictured) and Jacob Stein, on Wednesday, October 2, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall. All are welcome to attend.
According to Kogen’s website, “TaKeTiNa invites everyone to be a beginner again. It lets people re-experience the resilience , perseverance, and joy of a baby learning to walk. TaKeTiNa begins with the voice speaking rhythmic syllables and the drum is added to establish the beat. We then add steps to those syllables. Soon everyone is moving and stepping, some to the beat, some not. Tensions ease and the atmosphere lightens as we explore how our bodies move in and out of rhythm. We often share our thoughts as we solidify our steps. As the drum continues, we add a more complicated polyrhythmic clap, and then eventually a call and response of singing.”

The September 25 Music at Midweek event will be “Introduction to Alexander Technique,” with Rebecca Robbins, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall. The event is free and open to all.
Robbins will speak on the Alexander Technique, invented by Frederick Matthias Alexander (1869-1955). An account of Alexander’s self-experimentation and discovery is related in his book, The Use of the Self, which describes his groundbreaking work in changing movement techniques in everyday life. “The Alexander Technique is a way of learning to move mindfully through life. The Alexander process shines a light on inefficient habits of movement and patterns of accumulated tension, which interferes with our innate ability to move easily and according to how we are designed. It’s a simple yet powerful approach that offers the opportunity to take charge of one’s own learning and healing process, because it’s not a series of passive treatments but an active exploration that changes the way one thinks and responds in activity. It produces a skill set that can be applied in every situation. Lessons leave one feeling lighter, freer, and more grounded.”

The University of Portland Singers and Bel Canto will present a concert, “Stars I Shall Find,” featuring the choral music of Clara Schumann, Elaine Hagenberg, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Daniel Elder and others, on Sunday, September 29, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all. Conductors will be David De Lyser and Kathryn Briggs, performing and fine arts.

This 30th anniversary season of the University’s Mock’s Crest Productions will present Gilbert and Sullivan classic operetta The Yeomen of the Guard on June 8-9, 14-16, and 20-23. Performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. (2 p.m. on Sundays) in Mago Hunt Center Theater. Tickets are $34 for general admission, $29 for seniors/non-UP students, and $27 for groups of ten or more. University of Portland faculty and staff are offered $20 tickets and UP students are $15.
The Yeomen of the Guard was an attempt by Arthur Sullivan to move John Gilbert’s topsy-turvy world into more serious opera. It is a tale of a nobleman wrongfully accused of sorcery who has been locked up in the Tower of London and scheduled for execution. However, Mr. Gilbert puts his comic spin on this tale where bravery, comic disguise, and a lovelorn jailer and jester make a tragic tale end with true love overcoming all obstacles. It is one of Sullivan’s best musical scores with classic numbers like “The Merryman and his Maid.”
Mock’s Crest is a semi-professional company devoted to a yearly summer production of comic light opera, primarily the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan. It combines professional singers and musicians with students, faculty, and staff in the Department of Performing and Fine Arts. The production company was originally created under the guidance of the late Roger O. Doyle in 1990 with UP theater faculty support as his production team. This year marks the last year that Larry Larsen, performing and fine arts, will serve as producer after 26 years. Next year, David De Lyser and Nicole Hanig will be stepping in to assume leadership with a production of HMS Pinafore.

The University of Portland Orchestra will present a concert on Tuesday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The concert is free and open to all, and will feature winners of the UP Student Concerto/Aria competition.

Fasten your seatbelt for something completely different! That according to Mead Hunter of the performing and fine arts department. This year’s edition of the popular New Play Festival features Behind the Wheel, three short pieces set in three different cars parked around the campus, on April 24-25, meeting at 7:30 p.m. at Mago Hunt Center.
