UP Singers Shine in Vocal Competition

NATSsingersThe University of Portland hosted the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Cascade Classical Auditions on January 29-30. The annual vocal competition is for high school and college students from Oregon and Southwest Washington, with the largest categories comprising lower college women (freshmen and sophomores) and upper college women (juniors and seniors). The competition attracted 160 students from the NATS Cascade Chapter to the UP campus, and competitors from the University of Portland music program included three first place winners.

  • Lower College Women: Maddie Tran, sophomore, first place; Alissa Henderson, freshman, second place
  • Upper College Women: Lauren Kulesa, senior and Taylor Kendig, junior, tied for first place; Nicole Benavente, senior: third place
  • Upper College Men: Tanis Gonzaga-Guzman, junior, third place

All those listed will continue to the regional round in March, and those who go on from there will compete at the NATS National Convention in Chicago in July.

Music at Midweek: Stephanie and Saar

StephSaar1 copyThe next Music at Midweek performance will feature New York-based pianists Stephanie Kai-Win Ho and Saar Ahuvia, who make up the duo of Stephanie and Saar, on Wednesday, February 10, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. The performance is free and open to all.

UP Student Singers Shine

singersDuring spring break, a group of UP students competed in the National Association of Teachers of Singing Competition held at Portland State University, according to Nicole Hanig, performing and fine arts. Students from every major university in Oregon and Washington participated. Senior Lydia Blaine won first place in the division for college-age women, and freshman Catherine Jacobs won second place in the same division. Sophomore Tanis Gonzaga-Guzman won second place in the division for college-age men.

Women of the Bible Concert, Feb. 28

U of PThe Garaventa Center will present “Women of the Bible,” a concert highlighting the holy, courageous, and remarkable women in the Bible, on Saturday, February 28, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The concert will feature world premieres of music by Cynthia Gerdes and David DeLyser, composed for sopranos Nicole Hanig (pictured) and Rebecca Hays. Guest Performer William Berger, Oct. 27

William-Berger-Headshot-2012-150x150Nicole Hanig’s Vocal Performance Workshop class will welcome London-based baritone William Berger as a guest performer on Monday, October 27, at 2:40 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. Berger will then conduct a master class with four PFA students which will conclude by 4 p.m. All are welcome to come in and out for both the performance and master class portion. PFA Presents “Heart & Home,” Oct. 31-Nov. 2

U of PPerforming and fine arts will present an opera and music theater workshop showcase, featuring student performances, in a program entitled “Heart & Home” on Friday, October 31 and Saturday, November 1, both starting at 7:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt recital hall. The showcase is free and open to all. Saturday’s performance includes a reception starting at 6:30 p.m., provided by the Garaventa Center.

Featured performances will include staged scenes from Bernstein’s Candide and On the Town, Sondheim’s A Little Night Music and Company, and Jake Heggie’s operatic adaptation of Dead Man Walking as well as songs from Wicked, The Wiz, and both the operatic and music theater adaptations of Little Women. Humor As A Weapon Against Fascism, Oct. 22

U of PThe Garaventa Center welcomes UP history professor Brian Els as he focuses on humor as a response to Nazi oppression on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center recital hall. Nicole Hanig, performing and fine arts, and Gregory Pulver’s Musical Theater & Opera Workshop Ensemble will provide live renditions of music heard in 1930s Germany, including the singing sensation known as the Comedian Harmonists. The lecture is part of the Beckman Humor Project.

An Evening At The Theater

cabaretStudents of vocal music and theater will join forces in “An Evening at the Theater: Highlights from Operas and Musicals” on Friday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Recital Hall, according to Nicole Leupp Hanig, performing and fine arts. The program will include music from The Magic Flute, Cabaret, Guys & Dolls, Little Women, Hansel & Gretel, Into the Woods, West Side Story, and others. Admission is free and open to all.
