New to The Bluff – Pax Beebe, Technical Assistant, Clark Library
The Clark Library is pleased to introduce Pax Beebe, MLIS, as the newest member of the Collection Services team. As the Acquisitions/Metadata Technical Assistant, Pax helps with the magic that happens behind the scenes in the library–purchasing new resources, getting them ready to go on the shelves, and entering them into the library catalog so all of us at UP can find and borrow them! Prior to joining UP, they worked for several years at the Hillsboro Public Library as a skilled technical trainer and provided inclusive and compassionate assistance to library users. Outside of work, you can find Pax hiking at the coast, reading horror books, or hanging out in Beaverton with their partner and two cats. Please join us in welcoming Pax!
New to the Bluff – Jen Hamlow, Director of Study Abroad
After graduating, she traveled to Salzburg, Austria on a Fulbright Scholarship, taught English for a year in Vienna, then moved to Chicago to complete a Masters in Multicultural Communication at DePaul University. While in Chicago, she worked for IES, a study abroad provider, before returning home to Portland 6 years later to work for AHA International (now GEO) with the University of Oregon. In 2012, she transitioned from working for providers to working with them, serving first as the Faculty Led Coordinator, and then as the Director of Education Abroad and Off Campus programs at Portland State University.
She is looking forward to returning to a small liberal arts campus, working with the same programs that she once helped manage, and especially to the opportunity to share her love of Salzburg with others. (How DO you solve a problem like Maria?) When she is not on campus, she is chasing her young daughter from one activity to the next, camping in the great NW, or cheering on the Thorns and Timbers.
New to the Bluff – Michael McNerney, Director of Campus Safety
Michael is excited to return to the Bluff and the Department of Campus Safety and Emergency Management. He has spent the last nineteen years working in various aspects of the higher education campus safety industry, as a Campus Safety officer, dispatch supervisor, Community Emergency Response Team Trainer, and most recently as the Physical Security Manager reporting to the Chief of Police at Portland State University.
Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and a Master of Science in Management Communication in 2008, both from the University of Portland. Michael is a certified Physical Security Professional through ASIS and holds the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design Professional Designation from the National Crime Prevention Institute. He is also serving his second term as President of the Western Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators.
Michael returns to the department with deepened experience in technical solutions for campus security, community emergency preparedness and training, and building community partnerships and developing departmental transparency. Michael has spent the last three years at Portland State University partnering with various stakeholders and advocates on and around the Portland State campus to address challenges including accessibility, equity in security practices and protocols, and impacts on students caused by vandalism, individuals in crisis, and property crimes.
New to the Bluff – Joanna Cecilio, Director of the Moreau Center for Service and Justice
Joanna “Jo” Cecilio joins us as the new Director of the Moreau Center for Service and Justice. Jo is a native of Los Angeles, California. She returns to UP after serving a year as Catholic Chaplain for Faith Formation at Georgetown University and serving four years as Rector of Cavanaugh Hall at the University of Notre Dame. She earned a BA in Social Work and Spanish from UP in 2011.
Jo has traveled frequently over the years including living in Nicaragua and Spain and several trips to Thailand and the Philippines. After her time in Portland, she returned home to LA and earned an MA in Theology from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Her heart and passion lie in her efforts to engage with those at the margins. It is at the margins where we truly encounter Christ.
