You’re Invited to the First Faculty Colleagues Event of the Year! (Nov. 2) 

We invite the campus community to the first Faculty Colleagues event of the year, sponsored by the College of Arts and Science! Please mark your calendars for November 2, 4–5:30 p.m. in Franz 120. Come mingle, sip, chat, and take a moment to immerse yourself in the scholarly worlds of Kristin Sweeney (Environmental Studies) and Lezlie Cross (Performing and Fine Arts). Explore with us the staging of Shakespearian plays and how the interpretation is in the mind of the beholder and the amazing world of scientists who study volcanoes around the globe.

Inaugural CAS Colleagues Mixer, Nov. 14

2019 Human Anatomy & Physiology Society National Conference, May 22-26, 2019

Jacqueline Van Hoomissen, biology, is pleased to announce that the 2019 national conference of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) will be held on the University of Portland campus May 22-26, 2019. Jacquie is serving as the conference chair and she will be working in the coming year with the national HAPS leadership team to develop a program of update seminars and workshops focused on human anatomy and physiology research and education. If you are interested in knowing more about the conference or have ideas for workshops or speakers, please contact Jacquie at vanhoomi@up.edu.

HAPS is the nation’s leading human anatomy and physiology education society that welcomes anyone who has an interest in human anatomy and physiology science and teaching to join.

 

 

Outstanding Educator Award for Jacquie Van Hoomissen

Biology professor Jacquie Van Hoomissen has been selected as the Oregon Academy of Sciences (OAS) Outstanding Educator in Higher Education for 2018. She was cited for her “considerable contributions to life science education at the University of Portland.” She will be presented with the award on Saturday, March 3, at a ceremony at George Fox University.

2014 UP Science Night at Astor School

U of PEvery fall and spring the University’s science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and education faculty and students put together a Science Night event at a local K-12 school. This year’s spring event took place on Thursday, April 10, at Astor School in North Portland, and over 50 UP STEM/ED student volunteers (and three volunteers from PCC and PSU) turned out to work with kids in their respective fields. “Such a great evening full of cool sciency-like things for kids,” gushes Jacqueline Van Hoomissen, biology, who plays a vital role in organizing Science Night. “Robots, sheep brains, wetland biology, neurobiology, physics stuff I don’t really understand…I was amazed at how talented our UP students are, how willing they are to get out there in the community and do something meaningful, and their overall excitement for the event!  What a great way to wrap up the semester!”
