This Week’s “Visio Divina”
Visio Divina, a contemplative Lenten prayer, will be held twice on Wednesday, March 18, at 12:45 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The meditative prayer lasts approximately 30 minutes and focuses on an image from The Saint John’s Bible. The volume containing the focal image for that week will be available for participants to explore before and after the prayer. Visio Divina is sponsored by Campus Ministry and the Garaventa Center.
Questions may be directed to Beth Barsotti or Karen Eifler.
“My Life in Holy Cross,” March 3
Not long ago, Pope Francis declared 2015 to be The Year of Consecrated Life. To honor that declaration, the local Holy Cross community will partner with the Garaventa Center to offer “My Life in Holy Cross” on Tuesday, March 3, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. Rev. Charlie McCoy, C.S.C., will facilitate a conversation among Frs. Claude Pomerleau and Pat Hannon, who will offer compelling vignettes of their priestly vocations and lives in Holy Cross ministry. Following the panel, the priests will take questions from the audience. This is a great way for the UP community to get to know some of the human stories and faces of the religious community with whom we labor. The event is free and open to the public; light refreshments will be served.
For more information contact Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, at 8014 or eifler@up.edu.
Lenten Visio Divina
All staff and faculty are invited to engage in Visio Divina on Wednesdays during Lent. To accommodate varied schedules, there will be two sessions offered, at 12:45 and 7:15 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. In the frenetic pace of most of our days, Visio Divina is a chance to step into quiet contemplative individual reflection centered on an image from The Saint John’s Bible, a different one each week. Each session lasts about 30 minutes.

“Whimsy and Humor in The Saint John’s Bible,” Feb. 17
Fr. Eric Hollas, OSB, of St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., will offer a lecture entitled “Humor and Whimsy in The Saint John’s Bible” on Tuesday, February 17, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. In addition to shedding new light on the genesis of The Saint John’s Bible, Fr. Hollas will highlight the many visual puns and quirkiness in the art of the first fully hand-rendered Bible manuscript crafted in over 500 years.
This lecture is part of the Beckman Humor Project, and is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served at the lecture and also at the 6:30 p.m. reception in Buckley Center Gallery that officially kicks off the display of 10 large prints from the project.
The talk is sponsored by the Garaventa Center. For more information, contact Karen Eifler at 8014 or eifler@up.edu.
Confronting “Invisible Suffering” On Campus, Feb. 18
Depression, mental illness, thoughts of suicide, and self-harm are real demons confronting members of the UP community and those they love and live with. The Garaventa Center has partnered with ASUP to begin to dilute the stigma of talking about them. They will offer a panel presentation and facilitate discussion on Wednesday, February 18, at 7 p.m., in the Holy Cross Lounge on the third floor of Franz Hall. All campus community members are invited.
Paul Myers, Norah Martin, Rev. John Donato, CSC, Kristina Houck, and students Erin Kirkelie and Mariah Wildgen will identify warning signs, how to tap into pastoral and health resources, and the importance of seeing mental healch in the context of the University’s shared Holy Cross mission.
Ash Wednesday was chosen deliberately for this event, as it marks the beginning of Lent, a time to enter into solidarity with those who suffer, even if their burdens are not apparent to untrained eyes. Refreshments will be provided.
