The School of Nursing hosted a one-day international symposium in downtown Portland on Saturday, July 19 titled “The Portland Model DEU: A Journey to Future Possibilities.” The symposium was held at the Portland Hilton and featured a keynote address by Angela McBride, distinguished professor and university dean emerita at Indiana University School of Nursing.
The University of Portland opened its first DEU (Dedicated Education Unit) in the fall of 2003. Since then, the Portland Model DEU has been uplifted by national bodies and education experts as an exemplary model for preparing the next generation of nurses. The model has been adapted and implemented in numerous programs nationwide. In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Portland Model DEU, the national conference is focusing on the DEU movement into the next decade.
