The Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center has been named as a 2016 Facility of Merit award winner by Athletic Business, an online publication billed as “the resource for athletic, fitness, and recreation professionals.” The Beauchamp Center was the first of 10 facilities to be awarded around the country.
The announcement reads in part: “Designed to be a ‘game-changer’ for the University of Portland campus community, the Beauchamp Center drew responses such as ‘stunning,’ ‘beautiful,’ ‘thoughtful,’ and ‘sophisticated’ from judges. The building’s generous use of glazing reveals major activity spaces, arranged as fitness neighborhoods to make the center feel more intimate and approachable. Materials selection reflects the existing campus context, while helping establish the building’s own identity as the new heart of campus. Said one judge, ‘This project is beautifully and consistently detailed on both the exterior and the interior.’”
All winning facilities will be featured in the Athletic Business October issue and at the 2016 Athletic Business Show in Orlando, Florida. The winners will be honored with a video presentation at the Athletic Business keynote with Don Yaeger on Friday, November 18, at 11:15 a.m., followed by an awards reception from 6 to 8 p.m.
The Beauchamp Center was designed by Soderstrom Architects in Portland and HOK in Kansas City, Mo. It boasts 73,000 square feet with gymnasiums, exercise studios, suspended track, climbing wall, outdoor pursuits center, functional training area, and more.
