Orientation Mass Regalia: Please Order By July 18

tam copy2Faculty and staff who need to rent regalia for the Orientation Opening Mass on Saturday, August 27 are asked to please place your order online by Monday, July 18. Please visit UP’s Jostens page to place your order, click on Graduation Caps and Gowns, then select Faculty and Staff. You can place your order at this link.

Rented regalia will be available for pickup in the Chiles Center on Saturday, August 27, from 3 to 4:45 p.m.

Commencement Regalia Ordering

tam-copyFaculty and students planning to participate in the 2015 Commencement ceremonies may order their caps, gowns, and personalized graduate announcements at the Jostens ordering event in the Pilot House lounge on February 10, 11, and 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Orders may also be submitted online from February 10 through March 19.

Please note: any orders received after March 19 will incur a special-handling fee of $15.

McNerney-Hanson Ethics Bowl Showcase at UP

Staff and faculty portraitsThe second annual McNerney-Hanson Ethics Bowl Showcase was held on Saturday, April 5, according to College of Arts and Sciences dean Michael F. Andrews (pictured). The event was sponsored by Andrews, who also serves as the McNerney-Hanson University Endowed Chair in Ethics.

This year’s McNerney-Hanson Ethics Bowl highlighted the nationally acclaimed UP Speech and Debate Union, whose members explored two ethics issues in front of a packed audience at Mago Hunt Theater. One case study explored the relationship between ethics and technology in an examination of Google’s purported “driverless car.” The second case study explored the relationship between ethics, law, and science in an examination of whether bone marrow donors should be paid. Special thanks go out to Bohn Lattin and Brian Simmons, communication studies; Richard Askay and Andrew Eshleman, philosophy.

Unlike other ethics bowl competitions, the annual McNerney-Hanson Ethics Bowl Showcase reflects a particular UP emphasis on ethical formation of the whole person and the study and articulation of ethical theory and practice. The purpose of the Ethics Bowl is to encourage ethics education across the curriculum by exposing graduate and undergraduate students to a philosophically reflective, ethical style of thinking that allows them to apply an understanding of ethics to particular situations and issues.

Opening Mass Regalia, Information

Opening MassThe fall 2013 semester’s Opening Mass will be held in the Chiles Center on Saturday, August 24, at 4:30 p.m., and faculty will process in regalia. Faculty who plan to process and need regalia are asked to e-mail Billy McWood, university events, at mcwood@up.edu with name, degree, the name of the institution that awarded the degree, and height and weight. McWood must place the order with Jostens no later than July 12. Faculty members’ deans will decide if faculty are responsible for payment or if their departments will pay for the rental.

Faculty robing for the Mass will be in the north lobby of the Chiles Center; those processing should arrive no later than 4 p.m. to prepare for the procession, which will begin at 4:15 p.m. A representative from Jostens will be available to assist and answer any questions with regard to regalia.
