New to The Bluff—Claire McIlwain: Director of the Moreau Center for Service & Justice

June 23, 2025

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Claire McIlwain as the new Director of the Moreau Center for Service & Justice at the University of Portland. Claire brings a wealth of experience in community engagement, social justice, and Catholic mission-driven service. Her most recent work as the Refugee Services Program Manager at Catholic Charities of Oregon showcased her leadership in cross-sector collaboration and strategic partnerships, as well as her commitment to mutual aid and equity-focused service models. Claire’s background also includes extensive experience with federal and local grant management, training and developing, and creating intentional programs rooted in reflection and justice. Her emphasis on helping students become leaders in their communities during and after their time at the University of Portland whether that be locally or globally will be a strong foundation of the work at the Moreau Center.

The campus was deeply impressed by Claire’s commitment to the mission, her authenticity, and deep appreciation for both the history and future of service work at UP. Her understanding of thoughtfully working with communities, community-based organizations, and government entities will be an asset to the UP community. Claire shared, “the Moreau Center and University’s emphasis on building acts of justice and service into our daily lives inspires me. I’m excited to work with the students dedicated to creating a more just future for their local, national, and global communities.” We are confident that Claire’s collaborative spirit, strategic vision, and heartfelt dedication to justice will serve our students and our community partners well.

Dr. Alvin Sturdivant, VP for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence expressed, “Claire’s appointment reflects our deep commitment to forming students who engage the world with both compassion and courage. Her background in faith-rooted service, commitment to equity, and experience in community-based leadership align powerfully with our mission and values. I am confident that her leadership will build upon the Moreau Center’s strong legacy, guiding our students as they integrate faith, justice, and service into purposeful action.”

Please join us in warmly welcoming Claire McIlwain to our UP community!
