The Ad Hoc Committee on Commencement, commissioned by University president Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., has been studying alternatives for the 2016 University of Portland commencement ceremony with the goal to offer more commencement tickets to each student. The committee reviewed a number of options, and studied results from a survey of students from the classes of 2016 and 2017, yielding over 500 responses. Data clearly indicated students wanted more than four tickets per family, as has been the practice for recent commencement ceremonies.
After careful review, the committee unanimously recommended that the University hold two commencement ceremonies on Sunday, May 1, 2016. All undergraduate and graduate degree candidates will commence with their respective college or schools in one of two ceremonies, with a University sponsored lunch between the ceremonies. Fr. Poorman has accepted and approved the recommendation. The May 1, 2016 schedule will be as follows:
- 10 a.m.: Commencement I
- 11:30 to 2:30 p.m.: Lunch
- 3 p.m.: Commencement II
It is predicted that each degree candidate will be eligible to receive at least seven tickets. The lunch in between ceremonies is intended to provide an opportunity for all students, faculty, staff, and guests to mingle, take photos, and spend time on campus either before or after the graduates’ ceremony. More details about the new schedule will be made available during the fall 2015 semester.
