Farewell To Leanne

goolsby copyLeanne Goolsby has resigned her position as associate director of annual giving in the development office, effective July 18. She has accepted the position of director of development at Holy Redeemer Catholic School in North Portland. Goolsby has been a vital member of the development office staff and the Annual Team for the past six years. She was also a student caller with the University’s Telephone Outreach Program (TOP) during her undergraduate years. Leanne earned her bachelor’s degree from UP in 2007.

During her time on The Bluff Goolsby has demonstrated professional growth and leadership with the development office’s Direct Mail/Email program as well as the Graduates Of the Last Decade (GOLD) and Senior Class Giving programs.  A farewell party for Leanne will take place on Thursday, July 17, from 9 to 10 a.m., in the fifth floor conference room in Waldschmidt Hall. Please be sure to thank Leanne for her service to the University and wish her well with her new endeavors.

Faculty, Staff Invited To Reunion Weekend, June 26-29

REUNION LOGO copyFaculty and staff members are encouraged to join the hundreds of alumni who return to campus to participate in the annual Alumni Reunion. A special registration form for faculty and staff is available online, and those who would like to attend are asked to fill out the form as soon as possible. Reunion will take place on campus June 26-39. The faculty/staff registration form is available at http://tinyurl.com/lzsdzma. Most events are free for faculty and staff, as indicated on the registration form. The following events are not free and require payment: Farm to Fork dinner, Alumni Golf Tournament, and the Mount St. Helens bus tour. Reunion is the largest alumni event of the year, annually drawing more than a thousand alumni, faculty, staff, and friends to campus for a weekend of reconnection and reminiscing. This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Salzburg Study Abroad Program, as well as the milestone classes of 1964 and 1989. A Farm to Fork dinner kicks off the weekend’s festivities on Thursday night, followed by Friday’s National Alumni Board Golf Tournament, a bus tour with professors Bob Butler and Steve Kolmes to Mount St. Helens, the Bierstube on The Bluff welcoming reception, and the Late Night Gasthaus Talent Pub and Euro-Discotheque. Saturday features the Old Stomping Grounds 5K run, the 50 Year Club Mass and Lunch, a Men’s Basketball Alumni game, River Campus tours, a bike tour of North Portland, a story session with Brian Doyle, receptions for the classes observing quinquennial anniversaries, and the signature event of the weekend, the Welcome Home BBQ and Dance. The weekend concludes on Sunday with the All-Alumni Mass and Brunch.

Rich Baek Going For GOLD

baek copyUniversity regent and alumnus Rich Baek has extended his challenge to young alumni to help raise funds for the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, which broke ground in May. His first challenge was to donate $50,000 to the center if 601 GOLD alumni (Graduates Of the Last Decade) donated to the University by June 1, 2014. The 601 figure was designed to highlight the deadline (6/01) of the challenge, which was met two months early, according to Leanne Goolsby, associate director of annual giving.

Baek is now increasing his donation, offering an additional $100 to the Beauchamp Center for each additional GOLD donor by June 30, 2014. GOLDs can make their donation to any area of the University and still be eligible for Baek’s match. As of June 1, the total number of young alumni who have responded to Baek’s challenge is 702, according to Goolsby. More information about the 601- GOLD Challenge can be found at www.up.edu/601.

Gifts made to the Beauchamp Center are included in the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and with a goal of raising $175 million by the end of the campaign on June 30. The campaign has raised nearly $181 million to date and is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university. Farewell Reception For Fr. Beauchamp, June 11

beauchamp150A farewell reception for University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., will take place on Wednesday, June 11, beginning at 2:15 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons dining room, according to Laurie Kelley, vice president of university relations. All are welcome as Fr. Beauchamp takes this opportunity to thank faculty and staff for their work and service to the University during his time here as president, and vice versa.

There will be a short program starting at 2:30 p.m., but otherwise the reception is intended as a low-key, come-and-go as you need event. There will be light snacks and refreshments. For more information contact Jamie Berger, university relations, at 7397 or bergerj@up.edu.

UP Celebrates RISE Campaign With Heroes Among Us Gala

Heroes-Campaign-TotalAlthough the RISE Campaign doesn’t officially end until June 30, University of Portland celebrated the Campaign’s close with a gala attended by more than 600 friends and benefactors on Thursday, May 8. Called “Heroes Among Us,” the gala honored the men, women, corporations, and foundations who helped UP achieve its ambitious $175 million goal. To date, the Campaign has raised more than $180,741,561. The gala also celebrated UP’s “future heroes”—the students and young alumni who have directly benefited from the Campaign.

Among the highlights of the RISE Campaign:

  • 12 new or renovated buildings and structures
  • 9 new professorships
  • Nearly $49 million for 232 new scholarships
  • The establishment of the Dundon-Berchtold Fund for Moral Development and Applied Ethics and the Beckman Humor Project; the expansion of the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation; and many gifts in support of campus ministry, the Garaventa Center, and the Moreau Center.

The RISE Campaign doesn’t officially end until June 30, and the University is still pursuing a participation goal of 7,000 donors for the fiscal year. Participation rates of alumni, faculty, and staff affect national rankings and influence grant-making decisions of some foundations. Nominate Students For Maloney Scholarships

maloney copyEach year, the Maloney Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship invites University faculty and staff to nominate current full-time undergraduate students that are here for the 2014-15 school year who meet the following criteria as established by the donor:

  • Academic achievement;
  • Outstanding contribution to the University;
  • Outstanding contribution to the community.

Over recent years, the scholarship fund has provided financial support to two students annually. Nominations should provide information about a student’s activities, involvement with campus projects, community service/volunteer efforts off-campus, and any awards or special recognition. Grade level is not specified, but preference will be given to seniors who plan to graduate in May or August of 2015.

Bob Maloney ’64 is a shareholder in the Portland law firm of Lane Powell. He served as a member of the President’s Advisory Council for the College of Arts and Sciences and is past chair of the board of directors of the Oregon Indepen­dent College Foundation (OICF).

UP Announces O’Dea International Scholarship

O'Dea copyThe University of Portland has established the O’Dea International Scholarship, endowed by  G. Kelly O’Dea ’70, an alumnus of the Salzburg Study Abroad Program. Valued in excess of $100,000, the scholarship is named in honor of his family, which includes two additional Salzburg alumni, Julie and Kitty.

The scholarship is intended to encourage global learning and exchange by assisting deserving University of Portland scholars in that pursuit. The scholarship will give a preference to students with financial need who are participating in the Salzburg program. Other possible scholarship recipients are students with financial need who are enrolled in a university program that involves “global change and cross-culture collaboration through international study and travel.”

Cited in a Harvard Business School case as “a global marketing pioneer, business builder and change leader,” O’Dea’s resume includes serving as president of worldwide clients at Ogilvy & Mather and president of Foote Cone & Belding Worldwide, both top global communications companies. He is currently chairman of AllianceHPL, a private strategic services firm focused on applied innovation for large multi-national companies. He has served for 12 years on the University’s board of regents.

$50,000 Galarneau Gift

galarneau croppedThe University has announced a RISE Campaign gift of $50,000 from Donald T. Galarneau, a 1949 University graduate who worked at General Electric Company for 35 years as a field engineer. The gift will be divided equally for the Shiley School of Engineering and the Donald T. Galarneau Endowed Scholarship.

A Portland resident, Galarneau earned a degree in physics at the University and served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. His interests at the University of Portland include the engineering and science programs and the Mini Baja Project. He often attends University reunions and events and is involved with the local Catholic radio station KBVM.

The Galarneau gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million by 2014. The RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $172 million to date, is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university. $310,000 RISE Gift From Bruce and Barbara Weir

RISE150The University of Portland has announced a RISE Campaign gift of $310,000 from the estate of Bruce and Barbara Weir, who both passed away in 2012. The gift includes a $201,000 donation to campus ministry and $109,000 to the Garaventa Center.

The Weirs had no direct connection with the University but were strong supporters of Catholic education. They both worked in government jobs for the state of Washington. After retiring, they joined the Peace Corps for a year and later purchased an orchard outside of Hood River.

Their gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million by 2014. The campaign has raised more than $172 million to date and is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.

$1.35M RISE Gift From Elizabeth James ’77, ’86

JamesOver the past year, the University of Portland has been the beneficiary of a $1.35 million gift from the estate of alumna Elizabeth James, ’77, ’86 (pictured, from the 1977 Log). A portion of the gift, more than $1 million, was dedicated to the renovated Clark Library, where a state-of-the-art conference room was named in James’ honor. In addition, the Elizabeth A. James Endowed Scholarship Fund was established with $350,000 of the estate’s gift. The scholarship fund goes to help students enrolled in the Pamplin School of Business.

James was director of finance for Providence Health Systems in Portland when she passed away in 2012 at the age of 57. She earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1977 and an MBA in 1986, both from University of Portland. After passing her Certified Public Accountant exam, she worked as an auditor for Blue Cross, Blue Shield. In 1983, she joined Providence, where she worked for most of her career. James volunteered extensively for numerous organizations and causes she supported.
