All are invited to a free performance of Angel of the Amazon, a new American opera by Evan Mack, on Saturday, February 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The opera presents the riveting story of Sr. Dorothy Stang and her 2005 martyrdom as she worked to help the poor in the Brazilian rainforest, and features UP faculty member Nicole Hanig in a supporting role. Music at Midweek: Composer Evan Mack, Feb. 20
The next Music at Midweek will feature composer Evan Mack lecturing about his compositional process on Wednesday, February 20, at 12:30 p.m., in Mago Hunt Center Recital Hall. Music at Midweek is free and open to all.
Mack is an American composer, librettist, and pianist. He is highly esteemed as a gifted composer by music industry members and colleagues, and composed the music and libretto for his opera, Angel of the Amazon, which will be presented on campus on Saturday, February 23, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Annual UP Christmas Vespers Concert: Dec. 1
The annual University of Portland Choral holiday concert will take place on Saturday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher. The concert will feature the University of Portland Singers, Bel Canto, the Trombone Ensemble and Hand Bell Choir, and readings, carols, hymns, and the music of Michael Praetorius, Ēriks Ešenvalds, Kim André Arnesen, Ola Gjeilo, Libby Larsen, Arvo Pärt, Randall Stroope, Zoltan Kodaly, René Clausen, Pavel Tchesnokov and others.

Wind Symphony & Women’s Chorale, Nov. 17
The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Women’s Chorale will present a concert on Saturday, November 17, at 3 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. No tickets are required.
The concert will feature Canadian composer Cait Nishimura for the world premiere of her newest piece, In Dreams, and a performance of Athabasca. In addition, the Women’s Chorale will perform the lively Japanese children’s song, Hotaru Koi and the Wind Symphony will present music from the film Spirited Away. The two ensembles will join together to perform Sigur Ros’ plaintive ára bátur, featuring UP saxophone and jazz professor Don Norton.
