NETWORK MAINTENANCE (Oct. 17)

October 11, 2024

Information Services will be performing network maintenance from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 17. This will impact both wired and WiFi connections and users may experience intermittent issues accessing the internet through the campus network. UP internet resources, such as PilotsUP and the UP website will also be inaccessible intermittently during this maintenance window. (Read More).

“Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” (Oct. 20)

In partnership with the American Cancer Society, UP will host the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walkathon on October 20 starting at 9 a.m. Making Strides of Oregon and SW Washington is the premier breast cancer walk in the area. (Read More).

Tibetan Nuns Jangchub Jamtse USA Tour (Oct. 21)

Campus Ministry, in partnership with Wholistic Peace Institute, will host a special event on campus with the Tibetan nuns of Jangchub Choeling Buddhist Nunnery in India, on their first-ever USA tour. Their performance will encompass profound Buddhist spiritual practices with Tibetan tradition and symbolism. (Read More).

The Schoenfeldt Distinguished Writers Series Welcomes Viet Thanh Nguyen (Oct. 23)

The Schoenfeldt Distinguished Writers series is delighted to welcome novelist and memoirist Viet Thanh Nguyen to our campus for a talk on Wednesday October 23. Health & Counseling Center Vaccine Clinic (Oct. 28)

The Health & Counseling Center is partnering with Safeway to bring flu and COVID vaccines to campus. This vaccination clinic will be held in Clark Library and is open to students and employees.  Safeway will bill your insurance for the vaccines and most major insurance plans are accepted.  Kaiser is accepted for the flu vaccine only. The English Department Reading & Lecture Series Welcomes UP Alumnus Mark Pomeroy (Oct. 30)

The English Department Reading & Lecture Series will be hosting UP alumnus Mark Pomeroy for a reading from his second novel, “The Tigers of Lents” on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 5-6 p.m. in Brian Doyle Auditorium. “The Tigers of Lents” takes place in Southeast Portland and on The Bluff, as it details a family of sisters moving beyond their poverty-strained years of high school. Fr. Pat Hannon, CSC, published From Glory to Glory: A Pilgrim’s Notes From the Badlands of Grace. Occasioned by the author’s walking, with siblings, the famous Camino de Santiago in the fall of 2024, the book traces all manner of other pilgrimages—to and from home, family, love, self, and God. One Subject Press, Saint Paul, Minnesota. November, 2025.

Jessica Murphy Moo, editor of Portland Magazine and director of storytelling, wrote the lyrics to two songs in “We Go On, Oswego,” a song cycle honoring female refugees who lived at Camp Ontario in upstate New York. From 1944-1946, Camp Ontario provided emergency shelter to refugees from Nazi-occupied Europe. “We Go On, Oswego” was performed at Nazareth College, in collaboration with Finger Lakes Opera, on December 4, 2025. It was commissioned by Katie Hannigan, PhD. The song “There Is No Underground,” was written in collaboration with composer Maria Thompson Corley, and the song “My Table,” was written in collaboration with composer Kurt Erickson.
