Lunch Discussion: Civil Discourse in our Classrooms (Oct. 1)

September 13, 2024

Engaged Humanities @UP and the NEH-funded Civic Humanities Working Group invite all interested UP faculty to join a discussion (and lunch on us) on cultivating genuine conversation, and even disagreements, in our classrooms. Prior to the event, attendees will read a brief Washington Post article on how other campuses are encouraging spaces for open discussion, then we’ll talk over lunch about what conversation at UP looks like right now. Apply to Accompany a Social Justice Immersion (Due Oct. 13)

The Moreau Center would like to invite all staff and faculty in full-time, exempt positions to apply to accompany a Social Justice Immersion with the Moreau Center for Service and Justice! NOW OPEN: The UP Writing Center

The UP Writing Center is a terrific peer-tutoring resource that can support student writers from any discipline and is open for the Fall 2024 semester. Students can meet their Writing Assistant in person in the Learning Commons (BC 163) or online. We count on faculty to get the word out to students about this valuable resource, so please consider encouraging your students to seek us out. New to The Bluff—Shannon Farley—Administrative Assistant, Clark Library

Shannon came to UP from the Diocese of Fresno, California in the Office of Catholic Education where she worked for 13 years as the Director of Student Information Systems and Records. After working with younger students, she decided to explore working in higher ed when she moved to Portland to be closer to her daughter. (Read More).

OSHA Safety Committee

The University of Portland is committed to providing a safe and healthy workplace for all. The UP OSHA Safety Committee brings workers and managers together in a collaborative atmosphere to achieve this goal. The committee is responsible for building inspections, reviewing accident, injury, and near miss reports, and working to address safety hazards. (Read More).

Seeking Applicants: Inclusive Teaching Scholar Program

Outdoor Pursuits Wilderness Emergency Training Course (Sept. 28-29)

June 10, 2024

The Outdoor Pursuits Program will host a wilderness first aid and first responder training course on September 28-29. This course will give you the medical skills, technical skills, and decision-making skills to respond to an incident in the backcountry. We will cover topics such as wilderness anaphylaxis, dislocations, genitourinary issues, calling for a rescue, environmental medicine, and more! (Read More).

Dave Houglum, Director of Leadership Studies and Leadership Professor of Practice in the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, facilitated a multi-day series of invited leadership development workshops for the staff team at Lutherhaven Ministries in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Houglum led six interactive sessions focused on DiSC-informed leadership, coaching-centered leadership, servant leadership and accompaniment, powerful feedback, and the co-creation of team commitments to support healthy culture and sustainable impact. In addition, Houglum provided multiple individual leadership coaching sessions for staff members throughout the engagement. January 2026.

Christi Richardson-Zboralski, Director of Marketing – Graduate Programs, published a short story under pen name, Christi R. Suzanne, entitled “Outlaw’s Dust.” In Lisa Diane Kastner (Ed.) 27 Stories: An LA Wildfire Anthology. Running Wild Press. January 7, 2026. Fr. Pat Hannon, CSC, published From Glory to Glory: A Pilgrim’s Notes From the Badlands of Grace.
