New Garaventa Center Podcast: Three Local CSCs And Their Vatican II Memories
Our community teems with stories and memories. Recently, local Holy Cross priests Dick Rutherford, Dick Berg, and Bob Antonelli sat down with Garaventa Center Director Karen Eifler to share their memories of what it was like to be a young seminarian in Rome during the momentous changes ushered into the Roman Catholic Church by the Second Vatican Council. They also reflected on the impact of Vatican II on their ensuing 60+ years of ministry, and the connections to the Synod recently convened by Pope Francis.
The 34-minute podcast is available on Apple Podcasts at this link, perfect for some winter break listening.

Card Campaign Supporting Bill Reed ‘72
For those that may not know, Bill Reed recently began his treatment for bladder cancer. Bill started chemotherapy in early December, and we are thrilled to share that he is doing remarkably well and maintaining an incredible spirit throughout this challenging time.
Many of you have reached out, expressing your kindness and concern for Bill. His family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support surrounding him. Since Bill Reed retired from the University in 2018, he has started volunteering for the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry in Hillsboro, and like all things Bill does, he is now running it.
We’ve decided to organize a heartwarming card campaign in response to numerous inquiries about how you can show your support. A collection of well wishes and words of encouragement can significantly impact Bill Reed’s journey toward recovery. Your thoughtful notes will not only lift his spirits but also serve as a constant reminder of the love and positivity surrounding him. If you would like, you can also bring non-perishable food items, and we will donate all items collected in the name of Bill Reed.
If you’d like to participate in this campaign, please drop off or send a card andnon-perishable food items to the Alumni Office. The Alumni Office, located at 5826 N Willamette Blvd, Portland, OR 97203, is open Monday–Friday from 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. You are also welcome to drop your note in campus mail. We will compile all the cards and deliver them to Bill.
Bill is incredibly resilient, and your messages will undoubtedly contribute to his strength and determination as he faces this challenge. Let’s unite to make this card campaign a beautiful display of solidarity and encouragement for our beloved friend. Thank you for your continued support, and let’s flood Bill Reed’s world with love and hope!
University of Portland Medal, 1972-1983
It is no secret that University of Portland is sustained and supported by many outstanding individuals. At UP, we are committed to our community and our mission because people are the mission. The University of Portland medal was an historic award given to members of our UP community who exemplified a commitment to that mission. The Museum & Archives have a new article on PortLog, highlighting families and individuals who received the University’s highest award, along with our perpetual gratitude.

Upcoming Digital Lab Move
The Clark Library’s Digital Lab is relocating to the Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation over the winter break. The Lab will be closed from December 15 through January 15 for packing, moving, and set up in the new space! It will be fully operational and ready for Spring semester.
Even though it’s in a different building, the library is still managing this service and excited for it to be part of a new student hub for innovation—from designing and ideating to creating and developing!
Questions? Contact José Velazco, Digital Lab Coordinator.
Clark Library: Spring Course Reserves
Get some of your Spring semester prep out of the way! Library staff are ready to set up course reserves for your Spring classes! Course reserves can be online material, print items, or films you wish to make available to your students. We also help you with copyright screening and scan materials to meet accessibility standards.
Faculty often request that we scan chapters from print books for electronic reserve, but please note we are restricted to one chapter or 10% of an entire book.
If you plan to use items previously on course reserves, please state it under the Additional Information section on the course reserves form to facilitate the process. For new items, please fill out as much information as possible on the form.

Committee on Committees Annual Service Survey for 2024-2025
UPDATE: The Committee on Committees is happy to report that approximately 65% of faculty have already filled out the Annual Service Survey for 2024-2025. Way to go, faculty!
The Committee on Committees is asking all faculty to fill out the survey, even if they are planning to serve in a leadership or administrative role (e.g., department chair, associate dean), wish to continue to serve in their current capacity on an Academic Senate Committee, and/or are on sabbatical for part or all of the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Committee on Committees would like to hear from all faculty regarding their interest and preferences for committee assignments for the 2024-2025 academic year. It is important that everyone completes this short survey to let the Committee know their service history, service interests for next year, as well as availability across a variety of service opportunities. (Faculty who do not complete the survey are assumed to be available for assignment in any role on any committee in 2024-2025.)
The faculty survey is being distributed now so that the Committee on Committees can meet in February 2024 to make appointments and notify the faculty of their appointments before the end of spring semester (likely before spring break).
The survey can be found at: https://uportland.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_4Jk9qTxYF4wRqR0
Questions can be directed to Eric Anctil, chair of Committee on Committees (anctil@up.edu)
