Thanksgiving Food Drive

Army and Air Force ROTC and the Moreau Center SJCs are collaborating on a food drive this Thanksgiving. We have placed donation boxes in the residence halls and in different buildings on campus. We will be donating the food to those in need, through organizations like Because People Matter, the Oregon Food Bank, and LifeWorks NW. Your donations are much appreciated!

Please donate only non-perishable items that are not expired, that can be stored, and do not require refrigeration. A few examples of what is appropriate to donate: peanut butter, canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, canned stew, canned beans, pasta, rice.

The boxes will be open for donation from Nov. 5 to Nov. 22.

Committee on Committees Annual Service Survey for 2024-2025

UPDATE: The Committee on Committees is happy to report that approximately 65% of faculty have already filled out the Annual Service Survey for 2024-2025. Way to go, faculty!

The Committee on Committees is asking all faculty to fill out the survey, even if they are planning to serve in a leadership or administrative role (e.g., department chair, associate dean), wish to continue to serve in their current capacity on an Academic Senate Committee, and/or are on sabbatical for part or all of the 2024-2025 academic year.

The Committee on Committees would like to hear from all faculty regarding their interest and preferences for committee assignments for the 2024-2025 academic year. It is important that everyone completes this short survey to let the Committee know their service history, service interests for next year, as well as availability across a variety of service opportunities. (Faculty who do not complete the survey are assumed to be available for assignment in any role on any committee in 2024-2025.) 

The faculty survey is being distributed now so that the Committee on Committees can meet in February 2024 to make appointments and notify the faculty of their appointments before the end of spring semester (likely before spring break).

Music at Midweek

Please join the UP Music Program this Wednesday for our weekly Music at Midweek performance class held  from 12:30-1:25 p.m. in the Mago Hunt Recital Hall. All performances and presentations are free and open to the public, and all members of the UP community are invited and encouraged to attend. Our remaining meetings for the rest of the semester are as follows:

  • November 8–Guest artist Lori Hicks, PhD, will present From the Black Church to the Opera Stage. Hicks is the Director of Opera at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and will be giving this lecture in advance of her performance the following evening (Thursday, November 9, at 7 p.m. in the Buckley Center Auditorium) portraying the African American experience through classical song.

  • November 15–UP music students will perform a recital of music studied over the course of the semester.

  • November 29–UP music students will perform a recital of music studied over the course of the semester.

  • December 6–UP music students will perform a recital of music studied over the course of the semester.

Get an Entrepreneurship Minor through the Entrepreneurship Scholars Program

The Entrepreneurship Scholars Program is now accepting applications from students across all majors and disciplines for the 2024-25 E-Scholar cohort. E-Scholars is a highly selective program that accepts up to 25 students each year.

The year-long academic program challenges students to find their passions, explore outside the classroom, and build their network, all while developing their own venture. Other benefits of the program include domestic and international travel, working one-on-one with a mentor, participation in Pilot Venture Challenge, and being a member of the E-Scholar network. After completing the E-Scholar Program, you are also just two courses away from obtaining the Entrepreneurship Minor. To learn more and how to apply, click here to watch a short video.

Authenticity, Connection, & Play Workshops (Nov. 3-15)

Authenticity, Connection & Play—immersive playshops to help us deepen our connection to each other. 

This workshop series will combine tools from theater, performance art, authentic relating, and psychodrama to create an opportunity for students, faculty, and the wider UP community to deepen their connections with each other through authentic games and theatrical play. These practices will use movement, spontaneity, and expression to help us open ourselves more fully to each other and explore parts of ourselves that typically remain hidden and concealed.

From the Black Church to the Opera Stage (Nov. 8)

An interactive lecture with Lori Hicks, PhD. Hicks is a classical singer, composer and arranger, vocal coach, professor, clinician, and director. A native of Detroit, Michigan, she is currently the Director of Opera at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Hicks has taught at the University of Dayton, Central State University, Claflin University, and Kentucky State University (her alma mater), where she also served as Chair of Performing Arts.

Veterans Day Observances (Nov. 10-11)

You are cordially invited to our Veterans Day Ceremony. A 24-hour vigil to honor the service and sacrifice of veterans from multiple wars will conclude with a commemoration ceremony on Saturday, November 11, at 11:00 a.m. at University of Portland’s Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial on the East Quad.

Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will stand constant watch at the Praying Hands/Broken Wall Memorial for 24 consecutive hours, starting at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 10. The 24-hour vigil will conclude at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, with the playing of “Taps” during the retiring of the guard, and a posting of colors to begin a 45-minute commemoration ceremony.    Saturday’s ceremony will include guest speaker Sergeant Major Dennis Emmons, who currently serves the Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion Special Forces Group.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” (Nov. 10-19)

You are cordially invited to UP Theater’s second production of the 2023-24 school year.

Based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, Peter and the Starcatcher, by Rick Elice, takes the audience on a fanciful adventure into the backstory of Peter Pan. When a band of motley heroes join forces aboard the Neverland ship, the characters learn about love, friendship, and forging unbreakable bonds. With staging devised collectively by an ensemble of twenty-four UP students from across the University, this imaginative romp is a delight for audiences of all ages.

The Mago Hunt Theater will host matinee and evening performances throughout November.

Evening performances will be held November 10-11 and 15-18, at 7:30 p.m.

Matinee performances will be held November 11, 12, and 19, at 2:00 p.m.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students.
