Happy 25th Birthday to Corrado!

Corrado Hall, located on the northwest side of the campus with Villa Maria and Mehling Halls, was opened in 1998. It was the first new dormitory in over 30 years and began UP’s emphasis on modern student housing (Haggerty, Tyson, Fields, Schoenfeldt, and Lund followed within two decades!).

Next Global Perspective Seekers Meeting (Oct. 11)

Thank you to those who joined the first Global Perspective Seekers meeting back in August. We had a brief discussion about the format of our upcoming meetings and shared what we wanted to accomplish in our lives related to global issues. We also agreed as a group that it would be fun to discuss this New Yorker article, “The Case Against Travel.” Thanks for the suggestion, Jose! Reading the article is not required to attend, and we will encourage those who do read the article to introduce some of the themes into conversation.

This group is formed so there will be a place where we can share and exchange our experiences on interacting with other cultures and living globally. If you know others who are interested in this issue, please feel free to let them know about GPS too.

Our meeting is now set for October 11, 2023.

Eucharistic Procession (Oct. 3)

As a part of the Eucharistic Revival initiated in the United States by the Catholic Bishops’ conference, Campus Ministry invites our campus community to join us at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, for a Eucharistic Procession. The Eucharist is at the heart of Catholic faith, and Catholics believe that the bread and wine offered at Mass become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. Jesus is really and truly present in this way, and Catholics refer to the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is customary then to reserve the consecrated bread, Christ’s Body, in Catholic Churches and Chapels. The Chapel of Christ the Teacher and each of our residence hall chapels has a tabernacle in which the reserved Blessed Sacrament resides.  You can find it by locating the lit red candle that burns in each chapel. This signals to us that Jesus is present in the Eucharist in that space.

In many parts of the world, one custom is to carry the Eucharist in procession. Our Eucharistic Procession will begin at the Chapel of Christ the Teacher and follow a route throughout campus, passing by every residence hall and our academic buildings as a way to show our faith in Jesus’ presence among us in the Eucharist and ask for his blessing on our campus. We will sing Taizé hymns and litanies as we process, and we hope that you will join us! After the procession returns to the Chapel of Christ the Teacher, we will then spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available until 9 p.m. The evening will conclude with Benediction, which is a blessing given by the priest over the people with the Blessed Sacrament. This is the first event that Campus Ministry has planned as part of the National Eucharistic Revival, and we hope that you will join us in this prayerful event.

* In the event of rain, the procession around campus will be canceled, and we will have extended Eucharistic Adoration in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.

UP Theater Presents: A Workshop Reading of “TBA” by Carla Ching (Oct. 4–7)

You are cordially invited to UP Theater’s first production of the 2023-24 school year, a workshop reading of TBA by Carla Ching. Carla is an exciting up-and-coming voice in the theater, who has also written for several TV shows like Graceland and Fear the Walking Dead. She describes herself as being drawn to writing “plays that interrogate why people do terrible things to people they love.” TBA follows a young man named Silas who hasn’t left his apartment since being dumped and spends his time writing visceral stories that no one reads. When a literary agent surprisingly offers Silas a book deal, he believes he’s close to becoming “the next big thing.” But when Silas’ adoptive brother Finn shows up at his apartment, Silas’ stories start to change. TBA asks probing questions about self-fashioning and identity in our modern world.

Performances are October 4-7 at 7:30 p.m. and October 8 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mago Hunt Theater. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students. Faculty and staff are eligible for half-price tickets with the promo code “HALF4FACSTAFF”. Students are eligible for free student rush tickets on Wednesday, October 4 starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Box Office window.

Fall 2023 Cycle for Butine Faculty Development Grants is Now Open

The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is pleased to announce that the Fall 2023 cycle for Butine Faculty Development grants is now open. Full-time faculty, instructors, lecturers, and librarians (at assistant, associate, and senior ranks) are eligible to apply. All applicants must have an appointment for next year to be eligible.

Submit your completed Butine application to Teaching and Scholarship via Moodle and to your department chair and/or Dean by Friday, October 13.

If you plan to apply for a Fall 2023 Butine Grant, please take note of the following deadlines and workshop information below.

The purpose of the workshop is to offer tips and insights on ‘best practices’ for Butine grant submissions. We also will answer your questions. Faculty new to the application process are encouraged to attend.

Leadership Book Club—Invitation to Join

We invite you to be a part of a leadership book club for staff and faculty across campus. The purpose of the leadership book club is to provide a monthly opportunity for staff and faculty across campus (including graduates of the Leadership Fellows Formation Program) to connect and to support each other in our leadership journeys through shared knowledge, understanding, critical analysis, experiences, and literature.
