In each Fall 2021 UPBeat, your colleagues teaching the first round of the new Anchor Seminar (Core 101)—to which every single first-year student belongs—will let you know which of the six Habits of the Revitalized Core we are introducing to those 980+ souls that week, and what we are having them read and watch, so that you can build upon that in any way that makes sense to you. This week, we are introducing Diversity, Inclusion, and the Common Good. Readings include Walter Thompson-Hernández’s “From Compton to Samana,” from a 2019 Portland Magazine, “Oregon,” Mitchell S. Jackson, Zadie Smith’s “Speaking in Tongues,” and, viewing Vivian Chavez’s documentary Cultural Humility: People, Principles and Practices. If you ever want to know more about this unique seminar, chat up Gregory Pulver, Andrew Guest, Christi Hancock, Lisa Reed, Fr. Pat Hannon, CSC, Stephanie Salomone, Simon Aihiokai, or Karen Eifler.

Constitution Day Lecture, Sept. 16: “The Demise of Separation of Church and State as a Legal Theorem”
The University of Portland welcomes law professor Steven Green who will give our annual Constitution Day lecture. His talk is entitled:
“The Demise of Separation of Church and State as a Legal Theorem.”
The lecture will be delivered Thursday, September 16, at 5:00 p.m. in the Brian Doyle Lecture Hall (DB 004).
Green is one of the country’s foremost experts on the First Amendment Religious Clauses. He is the Fred H. Paulus Professor of Law and Affiliated Professor of History and Religious Studies at Willamette University, where he teaches courses in Constitutional Law, First Amendment, Criminal Law, Legal History, and American Religious History. He has a JD from the University of Texas and a PhD in History from the University of North Carolina, and has authored numerous scholarly works, including his most recent: The Third Disestablishment: Church, State, and American Culture (2018) and Inventing a Christian America: The Myth of the Religious Founding (2015), both published by Oxford University Press. Before coming to Willamette, Green served for 10 years as legal director and special counsel for Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a Washington, DC, public interest organization that concentrates on First Amendment issues. In this capacity, he participated in several of the most important religious liberty and religious establishment cases to be litigated before the US Supreme Court.
This event is sponsored by the Department of Political Science & Global Affairs and was made possible by a grant from the Jack Miller Center.

Fall Community Conversation—Disability Justice
Wednesday, November 3rd 3:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m.
We can’t wait to come together this fall for our Community Conversation! We will learn and share about disability justice and disability as an identity that intersects with other core identities.
For this Community Conversation, we hope you will choose two or three options from the list below. To fully engage in the conversation, please read or watch at least one before attending.
When we meet virtually on November 3, we will start the conversation by each sharing what pieces we chose and why, and we will offer one takeaway from each.
· The Smithsonian exhibit on disability history: Everybody: An Artifact History of Disability in America.
· Finding Dory, Disability Access, and Collective Access by Alice Wong
· 30 year anniversary of ADA conversation: ADA in Color Panel Discussion
· “Sometimes You Feel Invisible”: Performing Queer/Disabled in the University Classroom, Ryan A Miller
If you haven’t yet had a chance, we also still highly recommend this short video from Kimberlé Crenshaw on the Urgency of Intersectionality as a complement to any of these other pieces we are discussing. Note: there is potentially traumatic information shared in this video pertaining to police brutality.
Thank you for your good work at UP and for joining us in these dialogues. Please email oiedi@up.edu with questions, accommodation requests, or other feedback.

Campus Ministry Resources (Our Lady of Sorrows celebration)
September 15 is the celebration of Our Lady of Sorrows, the patronal feast for the priests and brothers of Holy Cross. To mark this celebration Campus Ministry is providing a few resources. First, we have made available a novena (9 days) prayer in booklet form, available in the Chapel, or as a pdf on the Campus Ministry website. Second, Campus Ministry has placed netting along the outside of the Chapel and we invite you to come by and write down on a piece of provided fabric a sorrow or intention and it to the netting. The netting will be placed before the altar for the 5p.m. Mass on September 15. All are welcome to join us for the Mass. Contact Fr. Tim (weed@up.edu) in Campus Ministry with any questions.

Exploration Level Courses for the Revitalized University Core
As we prepare to implement the Exploration Level for the revitalized University Core Curriculum, the Undergraduate Core Curriculum Committee is now soliciting proposals for potential Exploration Level courses to start in the 2022-2023 academic year. A brief one-page summary of the Exploration Level and proposal process is available at this link, and more extensive information (along with a link to the online proposal submission site) is available at the pilots.up.edu site for the Core.
Also feel free to join one of the information sessions offered during September for faculty considering contributing a course to the Exploration Level. Note that the same basic content will be covered at each session, and if time allows the hope is to spend part of the hour workshopping ideas for Exploration Level courses. For courses starting Fall 2022, we hope to review proposals in October in order to allow for departmental scheduling in November. The information sessions will be:
- Tuesday, September 14th from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in person in DB 236
- Friday, September 24th from 3:00-4:00 p.m. in person in DB 236
