Appointment For Moentmann

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) has announced the appointment of Elise Moentmann as associate dean for students, effective July 1. Moentmann is associate professor of history and has been a faculty member since August 1998. She has served as history department chair since fall 2009. She has served as director of the Summer Salzburg Session, chair of the Committee on Committees, member of the Academic Senate and the Senate Executive Committee, member of the CAS Curriculum Committee, and faculty advisor to the Phi Alpha Theta National Honors Society in History. Moentmann will succeed Jim Stemler, interim associate dean for students, who returned to his former position from retirement for the 2012-2013 academic year.

Senior Capstone Presentations

Senior communication studies majors will present selected research projects at the Department of Communication Studies Capstone Showcase Night on Tuesday, April 30, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Buckley Center room 163. John Martin Fischer Lecture

John Martin Fischer, distinguished professor of philosophy at the University of California at Riverside, will present a lecture, “Would You Choose to Live Forever?,” on Thursday, February 28, at 4 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. His talk is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public.

Fischer serves as president of the American Philosophical Association, Pacific Division, and is also project leader for The Immortality Project, an interdisciplinary research effort on various aspects of belief in immortality, backed by a $5 million grant from the John Templeton Foundation.

William Stafford Birthday Party

The English department’s annual William Stafford Birthday Poetry Celebration will take place on Thursday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. The celebration is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. The party commemorates the 98th birthday of Oregon’s late Poet Laureate, who died in 1993. Guests and poets will include Friends of William Stafford representative William Howe, Oregonian poetry editor Kirsten Rian, Judith Arcana, Erin Ergenbright, Sara Guest, and UP’s Lars Erik Larson and Herman Asarnow. Andrews Named Dean of CAS

University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., has announced the appointment of Michael Andrews as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Andrews has served as interim dean since August and holds the McNerney-Hanson Chair in Ethics. Andrews earned his undergraduate degree in systematic theology from Georgetown University in 1986, a master’s degree in philosophy of religion from Yale University in 1988, a Ph.L./M. Phil. in Greek and medieval metaphysics from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 1994, and a doctorate in philosophy from Villanova University in 2002. He came to the University of Portland in 2011 from Seattle University, where he was the dean of the Matteo Ricci College of Humanities and a faculty facilitator of the Sullivan Leaders Student Scholarship Program. Andrews was appointed interim dean when Rev. Stephen Rowan returned to the Archdiocese of Seattle to assume the role of Superintendent of Catholic Schools.

The College of Arts and Sciences is home to the largest number of students enrolled at the University—more than 1,250 students. It houses 32 degree programs within 20 departments and programs of study, with popular majors including biology, Spanish, psychology, English, communication studies and chemistry.
